No. 74 Squadron RAF
Number 74 Squadron, also known as "Tiger Squadron" from its tiger-head motif, was a squadron of the Royal Air Force. It operated fighter aircraft from 1917 to the 1990s, and then trainers until its disbandment in 2000. It was the Royal Air Force's member of the NATO Tiger Association from 1961 until the squadron's disbandment, it has since been replaced by No. 230 Squadron. Forming in 1917 as No. 74 (Training Depot) Squadron, the unit began life as a training squadron.Cossey 1992, p. 19. The Gloster Meteor was the first British jet fighter and the Allies of World War II, Allies' only jet aircraft to engage in combat operations during the Second World War. Pilot Officer Sydney "Timbertoes" Carlin, (18899 May 1941) was a British World War I flying ace, despite having previously lost a leg during the Battle of the Somme. James Ira Thomas "Taffy" Jones & Bar, MM (18 April 1896 – 30 August 1960) was a British flying ace during the First World War. Jones was born on 18 April 1896 at Woolstone Farm, near St Clears, Carmarthenshire. Edward Corringham "Mick" Mannock (24 May 1887 – 26 July 1918) was a British flying ace in the Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force during the First World War.
