Nir-Am
Nir Am ( he, נִירְעָם, ניר עם, lit. ''Nation Meadow'') is a kibbutz in southern Israel. Located near Sderot and covering 20,000 dunams, it falls under the jurisdiction of Sha'ar HaNegev Regional Council. In it had a population of . History The village was established on 19 August 1943 by immigrants from Bessarabia who were members of the Gordonia youth movement, including Zvi Guershoni, later a member of the Knesset. Over the years the kibbutz has also absorbed immigrants from Argentina, France and South Africa. During the 1948 war it was the headquarters of the Negev Brigade. In a report written in March 1948 by Yaakov Riftin investigating abuses in Haganah and Palmach units, it emerged that an Arab was seized, tortured and killed. History Of The Jews In Bessarabia
The history of the Jews in Bessarabia, a historical region in Eastern Europe, dates back hundreds of years. Early history Jews are mentioned from very early in the Principality of Moldavia, but they did not represent a significant number. Their main activity in Moldavia was commerce, but they could not compete with Greeks and Armenians, who had knowledge of Levantine commerce and relationships. Several times, when Jewish merchants created monopolies in some places in north Moldavia, Moldavian rulers sent them back to Galicia and Podolia. Haganah
Haganah ( he, הַהֲגָנָה, lit. ''The Defence'') was the main Zionist paramilitary organization of the Jewish population ("Yishuv") in Mandatory Palestine between 1920 and its disestablishment in 1948, when it became the core of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Formed out of previous existing militias, its original purpose was to defend Jewish settlements from Arab attacks, such as the riots of 1920, 1921, 1929 and during the 1936–1939 Arab revolt in Palestine. Kibbutzim
A kibbutz ( he, קִבּוּץ / , lit. "gathering, clustering"; plural: kibbutzim / ) is an intentional community in Israel that was traditionally based on agriculture. The first kibbutz, established in 1909, was Degania. Today, farming has been partly supplanted by other economic branches, including industrial plants and high-tech enterprises. Kibbutzim began as utopian communities, a combination of socialism and Zionism. In recent decades, some kibbutzim have been privatized and changes have been made in the communal lifestyle. A member of a kibbutz is called a ''kibbutznik'' ( he, קִבּוּצְנִיק / ; plural ''kibbutznikim'' or ''kibbutzniks''). In 2010, there were 270 kibbutzim in Israel with population of 126,000. The Gaza envelope ( he, עוטף עזה, ''Otef Aza'') is the populated areas of Israel that are within of the Gaza Strip border and are therefore within range of mortar shells and Qassam rockets launched from the Gaza Strip. The region is populated by 70,000 Israeli citizens according to the Israeli ministry of internal affairs. Baruch Kamin
Baruch Kamin ( he, ברוך קמין, born 15 April 1914, died 10 July 1988) was an Israeli politician who served as a member of the Knesset for Mapai from 1953 until 1955. Biography Born in Akkerman, Bessarabia in the Russian Empire (today Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi in Ukraine), Kamin attended university in Chişinău, where he studied agronomy. He also became one of the leaders of the Romanian branch of the Gordonia youth movement. He made aliyah to Mandatory Palestine in 1939, and joined kibbutz Nir Am. In 1944 he returned to Romania as a paratrooper emissary, and between 1945 and 1946 served as an emissary for the Bricha operation helping Holocaust survivors leave Europe for Mandate Palestine. In 1948 and 1949 he worked as an emissary in Czechoslovakia and Austria. For the 1951 elections he was given a place on the Mapai list, but failed to win a seat.
