Nine Night
''Nine Night'' is a 2018 play by Natasha Gordon. It focuses on the traditional Jamaican Nine nights, as a family struggles with their loss. Productions ''Nine Night'' had its world premiere production at Dorfman Theatre beginning on 21 April 2018, playing a limited run to 21 May. The production transferred to the West End, beginning previews at Trafalgar Studios on 1 December 2018 prior to opening night on 6 December. Playwright Natasha Gordon stepped into the role of Lorraine. The production played a limited run to 23 February. Critical reception The play received generally positive reviews. Dorfman Theatre
The Royal National Theatre in London, commonly known as the National Theatre (NT), is one of the United Kingdom's three most prominent publicly funded performing arts venues, alongside the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Opera House. Natasha Gordon
Natasha Delia Letitia Gordon (born 1976) is a British playwright of Jamaican heritage. In 2018, having previously been an actor, with her debut play '' Nine Night'' she became the first black British female playwright to have a play staged in the West End. Life Natasha Gordon was born in North London in 1976, to parents who were both migrants from Jamaica. Her grandparents had arrived in London from Jamaica by boat as part of the so-called ''Windrush'' generation in the late 1950s. Her mother joined them in 1963, finding work, a Jamaican-born husband and a reassuringly familiar West Indian community there. Gordon's debut play '' Nine Night'' premiered at London's National Theatre in April 2018 to critical acclaim, transferring seven months later to London's Trafalgar Studios on 1 December. Nine Nights
Nine-Nights, also known as Dead Yard, is a funerary tradition practiced in the Caribbean (primarily Belize, Antigua, Grenada, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad and Haiti). It is an extended wake that lasts for several days, with roots in African religious tradition. During this time, friends and family come together to the home of the deceased. They share their condolences and memories while singing hymns and eating food together. In the old days, the nights were calm and reserved for the most part - but that tradition has changed with the times. Today, these gatherings resemble parties much more than they resemble wakes (though this is not true for all “nine-nights”). Trafalgar Studios
Trafalgar Theatre is a new West End theatre in Whitehall, near Trafalgar Square, in the City of Westminster, London. It is set to open in spring 2021 following a major multi-million Pound sterling, pound restoration project aiming to reinstate it back to its original heritage design. Henry Hitchings (born 11 December 1974) is an author, reviewer and critic, specializing in narrative non-fiction, with a particular emphasis on language and cultural history. The second of his books, ''The Secret Life of Words: How English Became English'', won the 2008 John Llewellyn Rhys Prize and a Somerset Maugham Award. He has written two books about Samuel Johnson and has served as the president of the Johnson Society of Lichfield. As a critic, he has mainly written about books and theatre.
