Nindigully is a rural town within the locality of Thallon in the Shire of Balonne, Queensland, Australia. Geography Nindigully is north of the town of Thallon, the main town in the locality. The Moonie River flows south to north passing the town immediately to the west. The Carnarvon Highway passes north to south passing the town immediately to the east; the Barwon Highway has its junction with the Carnarvon Highway to the north-east of the town. History The name ''Nindigully'' is said to be a combination of an Aboriginal word (''nindi'' meaning ''small'') and the English word gully. The town presumably takes its name from the Nindi Gully pastoral run operated by Mr Baldwin which existed from at least 1862 although often spelt as Nindigually in its early years. The Nindigully Pub, built in 1864, is believed to be one of Queensland's longest continually licensed premises. The Nindigully Pub, built in 1864 in the town of Nindigully within the locality of Thallon, Shire of Balonne, Queensland, Australia, is believed to be one of state's longest continually licensed premises. It was a Cobb & Co changing station between the late 19th century and the early 20th century. Events The Nindigully Pig Races and Country Music Festival, and fireworks are held annually on the last Saturday in November at the pub. It raises money for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. Barwon Highway
The Barwon Highway is one of the shorter state highways of Queensland, Australia. It starts at the Carnarvon Highway in Nindigully, 44 kilometres south of St George, and travels east for about 155 kilometres until it reaches Goondiwindi, where it terminates at the Leichhardt Highway. The highway travels north of and roughly parallel to the Barwon River, after which it is named. The river forms part of the border between Queensland and New South Wales. The Moonie River (Mooni River) is a river in Shire of Balonne, Queensland and Walgett Shire, New South Wales, both in Australia. It is a perennial river of the Barwon catchment within the Murray–Darling basin. Name The river was named ''Mooni'' by explorer and surveyor Thomas Mitchell on 9 November 1846 but the origins of the name are unknown. In New South Wales, the river is officially known as Mooni River, but common usage uses the same spelling as in Queensland where most of the river is located. Carnarvon Highway
Carnarvon Highway is a state highway in Queensland and New South Wales, Australia, linking the township of Rolleston in Queensland's Central Highlands Region, via the town of St George, eventually to Moree in northern New South Wales. It is the main access road to the Carnarvon National Park, and serves as a strategic route to take B-doubles and other large vehicles (which cannot use the Bruce Highway) to the Queensland ports north of Rockhampton.
