Cynthia Akuetteh
Cynthia Akuetteh (born Cynthia Helen Archie in 1948) is a diplomat and was the United States Ambassador to São Tomé and Príncipe and United States Ambassador to Gabon. Early life and education Akuetteh was born Cynthia Helen Archie in Washington, D.C. to Richard Louis Archie II and Sallie Dolores Hines. She earned a B.A. degree in history with honors from C.W. Post College of Long Island University in 1970, and was awarded a master's degree in National Security Resource Policy from the National Defense University in 1973. Akuetteh completed two years of graduate study at Columbia University. Career Akuetteh began her career with the Peace Corps. Her initial assignment was as a Program Officer in Washington, D.C. She then moved to Ghana as Deputy Director of the program there. This is a list of ambassadors of the United States to Gabon. Gabon had been an overseas territory of France since 1910. At that time it became part of French Equatorial Africa, which included Middle Congo (now Republic of the Congo), Chad, and Oubangui-Chari (now Central African Republic). Gabon achieved its independence as the Gabonese Republic on August 17, 1960. The United States immediately recognized the new Gabonese Republic and moved to establish diplomatic relations. The anti-apartheid movement was a worldwide effort to end South Africa's apartheid regime and its oppressive policies of racial segregation. The movement emerged after the National Party government in South Africa won the election of 1948 and enforced a system of racial segregation through legislation. Opposition to the apartheid system came from both within South Africa and the international community, in particular Great Britain and the United States. Democracy in Africa is measured according to various definitions of democracy by a variety of indexes, such as V-Dem Democracy indices, and Democracy Index by The Economist. The top 3 African countries ranked by V-Dem Democracy indices Electoral Democracy metric in 2024 were Cape Verde, Seychelles, and South Africa. The Freedom Index ranks states based on the protection of 'political and civil liberties and freedoms' that individuals receive including the freedom to participate in elections.
