Nielsen (surname)
Nielsen () is a Danish patronymic surname, literally meaning ''son of Niels'', Niels being the Danish version of the Greek male given name Νικόλαος, Nikolaos (cf. Nicholas). It is the most common surname in Denmark, shared by about 5% of the population. It is also used in Norway, although the forms ''Nelsen'' and ''Nilsen'' are more common. In Sweden the parallel form is ''Nilsson''. ''Nielsen'' is also in use in the Faroe Islands. The frequent occurrence of Nielsen as a surname outside Denmark is due to emigration. Immigrants to English-speaking countries sometimes changed the spelling to Nielson, Nelsen, Nelson, Neilson, or Neilsen. Alice Nielsen
Alice Nielsen (June 7, 1872 – March 8, 1943) was a Broadway performer and operatic soprano who had her own opera company and starred in several Victor Herbert operettas. Background Her father, Rasmus, was a Danish troubadour from Aarhus. Her mother, Sara Kilroy, was an Irish musician from Donegal. Rasmus and Sara met in South Bend, Indiana, where Sara studied music at St. Mary's, now part of Notre Dame. After Rasmus was injured in the Civil War, the couple moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where Alice was born. The Nielsens moved to Warrensburg, Missouri, when Alice was two. Rasmus died a few years later. Sara moved to Kansas City with four surviving children. Early career Alice Nielsen roamed downtown Kansas City as a child singing. Christopher Nielsen (born 20 April 1963 in Oslo) is a Norwegian comics artist. He is especially known for his subcultural depictions. Nielsen got his first comics printed in 1980 after entering a competition in the Norwegian anarchist magazine, Gateavisa. Only three years later he got his first album published. Generally he works in a rough and direct style, inspired by the American underground comix tradition. His most famous cartoon, ''To Trøtte Typer'' (''Two Wasted Wankers''), depicts the life of the two drug users and petty criminals Odd and Geir living their relatively boring lives in Oslo, Norway. This cartoon has been made into a feature for television, running for 13 episodes plus a Christmas special. They also star in the animated movie '' Free Jimmy'' (Slipp Jimmy Fri) along with several others of Nielsen's more famous characters. Carl Nielsen
Carl August Nielsen (; 9 June 1865 – 3 October 1931) was a Danish composer, conductor and violinist, widely recognized as his country's most prominent composer. Brought up by poor yet musically talented parents on the island of Funen, he demonstrated his musical abilities at an early age. He initially played in a military band before attending the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen from 1884 until December 1886. He premiered his Op. 1, '' Suite for Strings'', in 1888, at the age of 23. The following year, Nielsen began a 16-year stint as a second violinist in the Royal Danish Orchestra under the conductor Johan Svendsen, during which he played in Giuseppe Verdi's '' Falstaff'' and ''Otello'' at their Danish premieres. Jørgen "Benny" Nielsen (born 17 March 1951) is a Danish former football player. His position on the field was usually striker, although he also could play as midfielder. Nielsen played 28 matches for Denmark, scoring 7 goals. He made his début against Scotland in a 1–0 loss. Nielsen started playing football with Brederød IF. He made his a-team début with AB. In 1971, he left Denmark for Belgium. His Belgian career took off immediately, with a hat trick in a cup match against SK Gullegem. One season later, fellow Dane Morten Olsen became Nielsen's teammate. In 1974, Nielsen went to RWDM. The team became national champions that season. Just like with Cercle, Nielsen would also stay three seasons for the Brussels team RWDM, as he went to their main rivals Anderlecht. August Bendix Christofer Nielsen (7 May 1877 – 21 February 1956) was a Norwegian architect. August Nielsen was born in the village of Vik at Sømna in Nordland, Norway. He was a son of politician Sivert Nielsen (1823–1904) and Jonethe Cornelia Falck Heide (1833–1927). He received the name Bendix from his maternal grandfather. In 1910 he married physician's daughter Ella Hassel, who was a sister of Odd Hassel. Nielsen attended Trondheim Technical College (now Norwegian University of Science and Technology) from 1893 to 1897, and spent the next years as an assistant of architects including Bredo Greve as well as Andreas Bugge, Heinrich Jürgensen and Ingvar Hjorth.
