Nicolet (provincial Electoral District)
Nicolet was a provincial electoral district in the Montérégie region of Quebec, Canada. It was created for the 1867 election (and an electoral district of that name existed earlier in the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada and the Legislative Assembly of Lower Canada). It disappeared in the 1973 election and its successor electoral district was Nicolet-Yamaska. Nicolet-Yamaska, in turn, disappeared in the 1981 election and Nicolet reappeared. However, Nicolet's final election was in 1985. It disappeared for good in the 1989 election and its successor electoral district was the re-created Nicolet-Yamaska. It was named in honour of French explorer Jean Nicolet who also worked for the Company of One Hundred Associates in the 17th century. Montérégie
Montérégie () is an administrative region in the southwest part of Quebec. It includes the cities of Boucherville, Brossard, Châteauguay, Longueuil, Saint-Hyacinthe, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Salaberry-de-Valleyfield and Vaudreuil-Dorion. The region had a population of 1,507,070 as of the 2016 census and a land area of , giving it a population density of 135.4 inhabitants/km2 (350 per sq. mi.). With approximately 18.5% of the province's population, it is the second most populous region of Quebec after Montreal. The majority of the population lives near the Saint Lawrence River, on the south shore of Montreal. Montérégie is known for its vineyards, orchards, panoramas, products, and the Monteregian mountains. The region is both urban (second in terms of population in Quebec) and rural. Émery Fleury
Émery Fleury (February 10, 1901 – October 16, 1975) was a Canadian politician and a three-term member of the Legislative Assembly of Quebec. Background He was born on February 10, 1901, in Saint-Léonard-d'Aston, Centre-du-Québec and became a dairy farmer. Political career Fleury ran as a Conservative candidate in the district of Nicolet in the 1935 election and lost. He won a seat to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec as a Union Nationale candidate in the 1936 election against Liberal candidate Alexandre Gaudet. Fleury was defeated by Liberal candidate Henri-Napoléon Biron in the 1939 election, but won back his seat in the 1944 election and was re-elected in the 1948 election. He did not run for re-election in the 1952 election. Alexandre Gaudet
Alexandre Gaudet (December 29, 1870 – January 20, 1961) was a Quebec merchant and politician. He represented Nicolet in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1933 to 1936 as a Liberal. The son of David Gaudet and Delphine Hébert, he was born in Sainte-Eulalie and was educated there. Gaudet worked on the family farm, established a general store at Sainte-Eulalie and then established the company Alexandre Gaudet Ltée, a wholesale business, at Aston-Jonction. Gaudet was a member of the Montreal Board of Trade. He served as mayor of Aston-Jonction from 1928 to 1937 and from 1941 to 1947 and as prefect for Nicolet County from 1930 to 1932. In 1892, he married Flore Bourgeois. His daughter Françoise was a Quebec journalist. He was first elected to the Quebec assembly in a by-election held November 7, 1933. Joseph-Alcide Savoie
Joseph-Alcide Savoie (June 5, 1872 РFebruary 4, 1933) was a Canadian politician. Arthur Trahan
Arthur Trahan, (May 26, 1877 РSeptember 22, 1950) was a Canadian lawyer, judge and political figure in Quebec. He represented Nicolet in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec from 1913 to 1917 and Nicolet in the House of Commons of Canada from 1917 to 1923 as a :Liberal. He was born in Nicolet, Quebec, the son of Narcisse Trahan and Ad̩line-R̩becca Rousseau, and was educated at the S̩minaire de Nicolet and the Universit̩ Laval. He was admitted to the Quebec bar in 1901 and set up practice in Nicolet. He was married twice: to Jos̩phine Dufresne in 1902 and to Diane Leduc in 1924. Charles Ramsay Devlin
Charles Ramsay Devlin (29 October 1858 – 1 March 1914) was a Canadian politician who was a Member of Parliament (MP) in the House of Commons of Canada, in the Legislative Assembly of Quebec, and an Irish MP in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Career Born in Aylmer, Lower Canada, the son of Charles Devlin and Ellen Roney, his father was a merchant from Roscommon in Ireland. After attending the Petit Séminaire de Montréal from 1871 to 1877, he studied at the Université Laval in the faculty of arts from 1879 to 1881 but did not graduate. Edmund James Flynn
Edmund James Flynn (November 16, 1847 РJune 7, 1927) was a Canadian politician and the tenth premier of Quebec, from 1896 to 1897. Background Flynn, the son of Jacques Flynn and Elizabeth Tostevin, was born at Perc̩ on November 16, 1847. Louis Beaubien
Louis Beaubien (July 27, 1837 – July 19, 1915) was a Canadian politician. Early life Born in Montreal, Lower Canada, the son of Pierre Beaubien, a physician and politician, and Marie-Justine Casgrain, he was one of the founders of Outremont. Political career In 1867, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Quebec in the riding of Hochelaga. He was also elected to the House of Commons of Canada as the Conservative candidate for the Quebec riding of Hochelaga in the 1872 federal election. He resigned once it was no longer allowed to hold both federal and provincial offices. He was re-elected in 1875, 1878, and acclaimed in 1881.
