The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau. Northern Cambria, Pennsylvania
Northern Cambria is a borough in Cambria County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of the Johnstown, Pennsylvania Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 3,835 at the 2010 census. History The borough of Northern Cambria was incorporated on January 1, 2000. It was formed from the merger of two smaller municipalities, Barnesboro and Spangler. The merger proposal was taken to residents in the 1997 election, passing in Spangler 410-243 and in Barnesboro 466-324. The area was first settled by Europeans in the early-to-middle 19th century. The presence of the West Branch of the Susquehanna River allowed loggers to move their harvest downstream. Small farms developed, but the area changed in the 1890s when mining of the extensive bituminous coal fields in the area became the dominant industry. Pennsylvania Route 553 (PA 553) is a state highway located in Indiana and Cambria counties in Pennsylvania. The western terminus is at U.S. Route 422 (US 422) in Cherryhill Township. The eastern terminus is at US 219 in East Carroll Township. Route description PA 553 begins at an interchange with access to and from the westbound direction of the US 422 freeway in Cherryhill Township, Indiana County, heading east on a two-lane undivided road. The route heads east-northeast through a mix of farms and woods, curving northeast as it passes through the residential community of Penn Run. The road turns east-northeast into more open agricultural areas with some homes, passing through Manor. Pennsylvania Route 271 (PA 271) is a north–south state route located in Western Pennsylvania. Its southern terminus is at PA 711 in Oak Grove in Ligonier Township, and its northern terminus is at U.S. Route 219 (US 219) in Northern Cambria. The route was designated on May 27, 1935 in coordination with the release of a new state road map. The easy grade section of the highway in Johnstown is notorious for the many rockslides that occur on the hillside above the road. PennDOT conducted explosive blasting on the hillside in January 2008 in an effort to bring down rocks and permanently correct the rockslide problem.
