Nick McGrath
Nick McGrath MHA is a Canadian politician in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. McGrath was elected to the Newfoundland and Labrador House of Assembly in the 2011 provincial election and represented the electoral district of Labrador West. He lost re-election in the 2015 election. He previously served as Minister of Transportation and Works, Minister of Service NL and Minister of Intergovernmental and Aboriginal Affairs. Before entering provincial politics McGrath was a town councillor in Labrador City, President of Combined Councils of Labrador, and a businessman in Labrador West. Background McGrath was born and raised in St. John's before moving to the mining area of Labrador West in the 1970s. He has run six businesses in the area and is a longtime volunteer. Labrador West
Labrador West (2013 pop.: 10,319) refers to a region in western Labrador in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador containing the twin towns of Labrador City and Wabush. The area is located in the southwest corner of Labrador, near the Quebec border and has been described as "a dichotomy of pristine wilderness and industrial development." The region's livelihood is based on iron ore mining which can be traced to the 1950s when the Iron Ore Company of Canada constructed Labrador City and the Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway to haul ore to the port of Sept-Îles, Quebec, 575 km to the south. The adjacent Wabush Mines were established in the 1960s by another company, along with the town of Wabush and the Wabush Lake Railway which connects to the QNSL. 2015 Newfoundland And Labrador General Election
The 2015 Newfoundland and Labrador general election, held on November 30, 2015, elected members of the 48th General Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Progressive Conservative Party which had governed since 2003 election, was defeated by the Liberal Party, which won a majority in the new assembly. The election had been scheduled for October 13, 2015, under Newfoundland and Labrador's House of Assembly Act, mandating a fixed election day on the second Tuesday in October in the fourth calendar year after the previous election. However, the House of Assembly amended the act in June 2015, to delay the election until November 30, 2015, so that the election campaign would not overlap with the federal election scheduled on October 19, 2015. Frank Joseph Coleman is a Canadian businessman. He was acclaimed leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Newfoundland and Labrador on April 17, 2014, and was slated to be sworn in as the 12th Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, but he announced on June 16, 2014 that he was quitting politics before actually assuming either position.
