Nicholas Hexum
Nicholas Lofton Hexum (born April 12, 1970) is an American singer, songwriter and rapper, currently the vocalist and guitarist for the multi-platinum alternative rock band 311 and The Nick Hexum Quintet. Early life Born in Madison, Wisconsin, to father Dr. Terry Hexum and mother Pat, Hexum went to Westside High School in Omaha, Nebraska. There, he played in the school's concert jazz band, and was a member of several local bands like The Extras, The Eds, and The Right Profile. In 1988, Hexum moved to Los Angeles to pursue music with his band Unity, including Chad Sexton, Ward Bones, and Marcus Watkins. However, this group soon parted ways. Hexum moved to Germany for a brief stint in 1990; while there, he got a call from Sexton, who was back in Omaha. Sexton's band Fish Hippos had a gig with Fugazi and he invited Hexum to join the band. Madison is the county seat of Dane County and the capital city of the U.S. state of Wisconsin. 311 (pronounced "three eleven") is an American rock band from Omaha, Nebraska. The band was formed in 1988 by vocalist and guitarist Nick Hexum, lead guitarist Jim Watson, bassist Aaron "P-Nut" Wills, and drummer Chad Sexton. Watson was replaced by Tim Mahoney in 1990. In 1992, Doug "SA" Martinez joined to sing and provide turntables. 311 has released thirteen studio albums, two live albums, four compilation albums, four EPs and four DVDs. After a series of independent releases, 311 was signed to Capricorn Records in 1992 and released the albums ''Music'' (1993) and '' Grassroots'' (1994) to moderate success. ''From Chaos'' is the sixth studio album by 311, released on June 19, 2001. In 2000, before this album was recorded and released they left Capricorn Records and switched to Volcano Entertainment as their permanent label. Singles from this album include "You Wouldn't Believe", "I'll Be Here Awhile", and "Amber". The latter was the most popular single from the album, and it still remains 311's most popular single to date. ''From Chaos'' is the first album to ever be recorded in 311's current recording studio The Hive in North Hollywood, California. ''From Chaos'' is an enhanced CD, featuring interviews with the band. Shortly after the album was mixed, lead singer Nick Hexum had his tonsils removed. "Bomb the Town," "Will the World," "We Do It Like This," and "Dreamland" are b-sides from this CD. ''Transistor'' is the fourth studio album by American rock band 311, released on August 5, 1997 by Capricorn Records. The album saw a change in musical style as fewer songs feature rapping in comparison to the band's previous albums. Upon its release, ''Transistor'' received negative reviews from critics, who felt it was overlong and self-indulgent. Retrospectively, however, the album has been more positively received, and was certified platinum by the RIAA. Music Clocking in at 67:59 and with twenty-one tracks (or twenty-three, counting both hidden tracks), ''Transistor'' is 311's longest album and, until their 2017 album ''Mosaic'', was their only album to contain more than sixteen tracks. The album contains the successful singles "Don't Stay Home", " All Mixed Up", and " Down", and was certified triple platinum with sales of over three million copies. Reception AllMusic's Peter Stepek was positive towards the album, saying "These riff-heavy and radio-ready songs are underscored by a tight drum sound (often with a piccolo snare), the scratching of turntables, and the crunch of heavy guitars: a formidable backdrop for this surprisingly melodic effort. ''Grassroots'' is the second album by 311, released on July 12, 1994. The album was intentionally recorded to have a "muddy" tone, and was recorded in a small house in Van Nuys where all of the band members lived together. This album also contains the track "Applied Science", which is a staple in 311's live show and has included a full-band drum solo since 2000. P-Nut records with a five-string Warwick bass for the first time here as well. The album was certified Gold in 1999 by the RIAA, having sold over 500,000 copies. A special vinyl edition of the record was pressed for Black Friday in 2011 at United Record Pressing in Nashville, TN. ''Music'' is the debut studio album by Omaha alternative rock band 311. It was released on February 9, 1993. "Do You Right" was released as a single. The album was certified Gold in 1999 by the RIAA, having sold over 500,000 copies. Background There are only five tracks that were not included on 311's previous independent releases; "Visit", "Paradise", "Hydroponic", "My Stoney Baby", and "Fat Chance". However, all of the songs that had been previously released were altered, most notably "Do You Right", where nearly all of the lyrics were changed. SA also changed his main verses in "Freak Out", "Feels So Good" and "Fuck The Bullshit". The breakdown in "Plain" was completely changed musically, and the lyrics were re-arranged.
