Newry, Warrenpoint And Rostrevor Railway
The Newry, Warrenpoint and Rostrevor Railway (NW&RR) was a former railway line linking Newry and the port of Warrenpoint on the Carlingford Lough inlet in Ireland, and the company operating it. The railway was absorbed into the Great Northern Railway of Ireland in 1886 and the line closed in 1965. History The NW&RR was incorporated on 27 July 1846 but was only able to reach the to the port of Warrenpoint, the additional stretch to Rostrevor some further on was never to be built. The directors contracted William Dargan to construct the line which was completed in 1.5 years, publicly opening on 28 May 1849. The line was not initially connected to any other. In 1854 the Newry and Armagh Railway (N&AR) made a branch from on the Belfast to Dublin main line to their station at Edward Street. Great Northern Railway (Ireland)
The Great Northern Railway (Ireland) (GNR(I) or GNRI) was an Irish gauge () railway company in Ireland. It was formed in 1876 by a merger of the Irish North Western Railway (INW), Northern Railway of Ireland, and Ulster Railway. The governments of Ireland and Northern Ireland jointly nationalised the company in 1953, and the company was liquidated in 1958: assets were split on national lines between the Ulster Transport Authority and Córas Iompair Éireann. The Ulster Transport Authority (UTA) ran rail and bus transport in Northern Ireland from 1948 until 1966. Formation and consolidation The UTA was formed by the Transport Act 1948, which merged the Northern Ireland Road Transport Board (NIRTB) and the Belfast and County Down Railway (BCDR). William Hemingway Mills
William Hemingway Mills (1834-1918) was a British civil engineer known for his work with the Great Northern Railway of Ireland (GNR(I)) from its formation in 1876 until his retirement in 1910. Life Mills was born in Yorkshire, England in 1834. He came under the instruction of the William Henry Barlow from 1850. Mills undertook work in Scotland, Andalusia and Mexico before becoming Chief Engineer of the GNR(I) from its formation in 1876. Mills was to introduce a polychromatic brick style to many buildings in his designs for the GNR(I). He was to work at the GNR(I) until his retirement in 1910 in his mid–70s. Greenore
Greenore () is a village, townland and deep water port on Carlingford Lough in County Louth, Ireland. History A lighthouse was built on Greenore Point in 1830. Several decades later, the Dundalk and Greenore Railway Act of 1863 authorised the construction of the port and railway. The port was constructed in 1867 to provide links to Heysham and Fleetwood. The village was constructed to provide homes for the dock and railway workers of the Dundalk, Newry and Greenore Railway. Economy Greenore has the only privately owned port in Ireland. It has three berths and can handle vessels of up to 39,999 gross tons. Newry Canal
The Newry Canal, located in Northern Ireland, was built to link the Tyrone coalfields (via Lough Neagh and the River Bann) to the Irish Sea at Carlingford Lough near Newry. It was the first summit level canal to be built in Ireland or Great Britain, and pre-dated the more famous Bridgewater Canal by nearly thirty years and Sankey Canal by fifteen years. It was authorised by the Commissioners of Inland Navigation for Ireland, and was publicly funded. Newry (; ) is a city in Northern Ireland, divided by the Clanrye river in counties Armagh and Down, from Belfast and from Dublin. It had a population of 26,967 in 2011.
