Newark Mayoral Election, 2018
The 2018 election for Mayor of Newark took place in Newark, the most populous city in New Jersey, USA, on May 8, 2018. Elections for all seats on the nine member Municipal Council of Newark was held the same day. A runoff election, if necessary, would have taken place on June 5, 2018. Elections are non-partisan and candidates are not listed by political party. Incumbent Mayor Ras Baraka avoided a runoff after winning a second term with 77 percent of the votes. Candidates The deadline for candidates to file for election is March 5, 2018, at which time each potential candidate must submit a petition signed by at least 1413 voters. Ras Baraka
Ras Jua Baraka (born April 9, 1970) is an American educator, author, and politician who is the 40th and current Mayor of Newark, New Jersey. He was previously a member of the Municipal Council of Newark and the principal of the city's Central High School until he took an indefinite leave of absence to run for the 2014 Newark mayoral election, which he won on May 13, 2014. Baraka was sworn in as the city's 40th mayor at ceremonies at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center on July 1, 2014, for a four-year term. He won re-election twice in 2018 and 2022. 2014 Newark Mayoral Election
The 2014 Newark mayoral election took place in Newark, the most populous city in New Jersey, on May 13, 2014. The race was characterized as a contest between two candidates, Ras Baraka and Shavar Jeffries, both from Newark's South Ward. Elections for all seats on the nine member Municipal Council of Newark also took place. Luis A. Quintana, who had become Mayor of Newark following the resignation of Cory Booker (who had been elected to the United States Senate), did not seek the seat. The turnout was 45,071 representing 29.59% of registered voters. Shortly after polls closed, Baraka declared victory in the election, with 22,751 votes to 20,260 votes for Shavar Jeffries.
