New Zealand National Badminton Team
The New Zealand national badminton team ( mi, Kapa badminton o Aotearoa) represents New Zealand in international badminton team competitions. The best result the national team has produced on the international stage was being the semifinalist at the Uber Cup in 1960 and 1972 respectively. It is controlled by Badminton New Zealand, the governing body for badminton in New Zealand. In February 2018, Danish badminton player, Rikke Olsen Siegemund was assigned to be the coach of the national team. Badminton New Zealand
Badminton New Zealand is the badminton organisation in New Zealand which was established in 1927 under the stewardship of Archdeacon Ralph Creed Meredith of Whanganui, one of its first champions, and became a founding member of Badminton World Federation (then known as International Badminton Federation) in 1934. It was incorporated on 26 May 1938 and responsible for promotion and development of badminton in New Zealand. Badminton New Zealand has 27 regional member associations and also organises the New Zealand Open badminton tournament. In an attempt to attract publicity, and thus sponsorship, players and fans, Badminton New Zealand chose Black Cox as a nickname for their national teams, an association to the sport's shuttlecock and the custom of naming teams in reference to the New Zealand national rugby union team. 1976 Thomas Cup
The 1976 Thomas Cup was the tenth edition of Thomas Cup, the world championship of men's international team badminton (its female counterpart is the Uber Cup). The final rounds contested by qualifying teams were held in Bangkok, Thailand in late May and early June. First played in 1949 Thomas Cup, 1948–49, the Thomas Cup competition was held every three years after that until 1982 Thomas Cup, 1982 and has been held every two years since. The 1989 Sudirman Cup was the first tournament of the World Mixed Team Badminton Championships, the Sudirman Cup. It was held from May 24 to May 29, 1989, in Central Jakarta, Indonesia. Teams 28 teams around the world took part in this tournament. Geographically, they were 13 from Europe, 10 teams from Asia, two from Americas, two from Oceania and one from Africa. India and Pakistan entered the competition but ultimately did not participate. Sudirman Cup
The Sudirman Cup is an international badminton mixed team competition contested by member countries of the Badminton World Federation (BWF), the sport's global governing body. The championship has been awarded every two years since the inaugural tournament in 1989. It used to be held at the same venue for the World Championships in the same year until the International Badminton Federation (now the BWF) decided to split the two tournaments starting from 2003. There are five matches in every Sudirman Cup tie which consists of men and women's singles, men and women's doubles and mixed doubles. The cup is named after Dick Sudirman, a former Indonesian badminton player and the founder of the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI). The current champion is China, which won its 12th title at the 2021 tournament in Finland. The 2008 Thomas & Uber Cup was the 25th tournament of the Thomas Cup and 22nd tournament of the Uber Cup, the men's and women's team competition in badminton, respectively. It was held in Jakarta, Indonesia, from May 11 to May 18, 2008. Host city selection China, Indonesia, and the United States submitted a bid for the event. 2006 Uber Cup
The 2006 Thomas & Uber Cup was held from 28 April to 7 May in Sendai and Tokyo, Japan. It was the 24th tournament of Thomas Cup and 21st tournament of Uber Cup, men's and women's badminton tournaments. Sendai hosted all of the group stage and play-off matches while Tokyo hosted the event starting from the quarter finals until the final. This was first time the Thomas & Uber Cup was played with a three-game 21-point scoring system. China emerged as champions of both tournaments after beating Denmark and Netherlands in the men's and women's competitions respectively. The 2022 Thomas & Uber Cup (officially known as the TotalEnergies BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals 2022 for sponsorship reasons) is the 32nd edition of the Thomas Cup and the 29th edition of the Uber Cup, the biennial international badminton championship contested by the men and women's national teams of the member associations of Badminton World Federation (BWF). The 2016 Thomas & Uber Cup was the 29th tournament of the Thomas Cup and 26th tournament of the Uber Cup, the premier badminton team championships for men and women respectively. It was held at the Kunshan Sports Centre in Kunshan, Jiangsu Province, China. The 2012 Thomas & Uber Cup was the 27th tournament of the Thomas Cup and 24th international badminton tournament of the Uber Cup. It was held from May 20–27, 2012 at the Wuhan Sports Center Stadium in Wuhan, China. Host city selection Jakarta (Indonesia) and Wuhan (China) submitted bids for the competition.
