New Zealand Trotting Derby
The New Zealand Derby is a classic event in New Zealand for 3 year old harness horses, run at Addington Raceway. History Formerly called the New Brighton Derby Stakes from 1914 to 1925, the race was conducted by the New Brighton Trotting Cub and decided in the Autumn. In 1925, it was taken over by the Metropolitan Trotting Club and decided in the Spring. In 1982 it was switched to the Summer. In 1968–1969, the race was 1 miles and in 1970–1972, 1m 5f. In 1973-83 it was a standing start race over 2600 metres. From 1984, it became a 2600 Metres Mobile race. Elsu
Elsu (foaled 19 December 1999) is a black New Zealand bred Standardbred pacer who won the Australasian Pacers Grand Circuit Champion and was twice the New Zealand Horse of the Year. He was sired by Falcon Seelster out of Interchange by New York Motoring. Racing record He was trained by Geoff Small and driven by David Butcher. In 2002/2003, Elsu won the Great Northern Derby, the NZ Yearling Sales Series Open, the New Zealand Trotting Derby and the New South Wales Derby. Caduceus (horse)
Caduceus was a New Zealand bred Standardbred racehorse. Caduceus is notable for winning the 1960 Inter Dominion Trotting Championship, trotting's premiership event in Australia and New Zealand, from a handicap of 36 yards, in front of a world record crowd. Prior to this in New Zealand, he had won major events including the New Zealand Free For All sprint race on three occasions plus the Auckland Pacing Cup. In 1960, he went to the United States, the first to prove he could match the very top US horses. He ended up winning more than £100,000, with gallopers Tulloch and Sailor's Guide as the only horses bred in Australia or New Zealand to have achieved this distinction at that time. False Step
False Step was a New Zealand Standardbred racehorse. He is notable in that he won three New Zealand Trotting Cup races, the richest harness race, and sometimes the richest horse race in New Zealand. False Step is one of three horses to win the NZ Trotting Cup three times, the others being Indianapolis and Terror to Love. False Step was also taken to the United States in 1960 by his trainer and reinsman Cecil Devine, who had driven him to victory three times in the New Zealand Cup. The horse scored success in the International Series at Yonkers Raceway, and also defeated the acknowledged American champion of the time, Adios Butler. Denis Nyhan
Denis Donovan Nyhan or D D Nyhan (11 April 1939 – 1 September 2021), was a prominent trainer and driver of standardbred racehorses winning many of New Zealand's premier racing events. He won the New Zealand Trotting Cup twice with Lordship in 1962 and 1966. In 1962 Nyhan and Lordship beat Cardigan Bay driven by champion reinsman Peter Wolfenden who was 5th. In 1966 they beat Robin Dundee and Waitaki Hanover. Lordship, sired by Johnny Globe, was bred by Denis' mother Doris Nyhan and trained by his father Don (D G) Nyhan who drove Johnny Globe to win the New Zealand Cup in 1954. Lordship also won the 1964 Auckland Pacing Cup In 1974 Nyhan won the New Zealand Cup with the free-legged pacer Robalan from Kotare Legend and Young Quinn. Lordship (horse)
Lordship was a New Zealand–bred Standardbred pacer. He won two New Zealand Trotting Cup races, the richest harness race, and sometimes the richest horse race in New Zealand. He won 45 races and as a leading sire, he sustained the Globe Derby sireline through his successful sons. In 1962, as a four-year-old, he beat the great champion racehorse Cardigan Bay in the New Zealand Trotting Cup on a rain-affected track. Doody Townley
David James "Doody" Townley (29 June 1925 – 28 March 1999) was a driver of Standardbred racehorses in New Zealand. He was associated with many champions and was a leading driver of harness horses in New Zealand. He is notable for winning four Inter Dominion Championships, the premier trotting series of races between Australia and New Zealand. Not surprisingly, he is also an inductee in the Inter Dominion Hall of Fame. Doody also won two Auckland Trotting Cups and the New Zealand Trotting Cup. These are the two top races in New Zealand. Townley died in Ashburton on 28 March 1999, and his ashes were buried at Ashburton Cemetery. Cecil Devine
Cecil Charles Devine (23 March 1915 – 4 July 1990) was a driver of standardbred racehorses in New Zealand. He drove many winners of major races in New Zealand. His greatest achievement was winning the New Zealand Trotting Cup, New Zealand's premier racing event, three times in a row in 1958, 1959 and 1960 with False Step. He also drove False Step in the US International Paces at Yonkers and Roosevelt. Throughout his career, Devine was one of the "old school" who referred to the sport as "trotting" rather than the more fashionable name of "harness racing". Peter Wolfenden
Peter Tom Wolfenden (24 January 1935 – 18 February 2023) was a New Zealand driver and trainer of Standardbred racehorses. He is most notable for his victory in the New Zealand Trotting Cup when he drove New Zealand's top pacer Cardigan Bay. He won the New Zealand drivers' premiership 14 times, including eight consecutive years from 1974, and twice won the Australasian Drivers Championship. He represented New Zealand seven times in the World Drivers Championship in harness racing, placing second in 1977 and third in 1971. He had 1762 career race wins in New Zealand as a driver, and 798 as a trainer. In the 1982 New Year Honours, Wolfenden was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), for services to trotting. He was inducted into the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame. Westburn Grant (1985–2020) was an Australian champion Standardbred race horse notable for being a three time Australian Harness Horse of the Year. Westburn Grant raced only three times at aged two in the 1987-88 season for three wins.Cain, R (1990), Harnessing A Miracle, At age three he blossomed winning the Victoria and New South Wales Derbies and finishing third in the Australian Derby. Anthony Butt
Anthony Butt is a driver of standardbred racehorses in New Zealand. He was associated with champions trotters Lyell Creek and Take A Moment, who, along with many other of his best drives, were trained by his brother Tim. He has won the Dominion Handicap eight times and has been inducted into the Inter Dominion Hall of Fame. He can be considered a champion driver, and has partnered with his brother Tim for many of those wins.
