New York Number Theory Seminar
The New York Number Theory Seminar is a research seminar devoted to the theory of numbers and related parts of mathematics and physics. The seminar began in 1982 under the founding organizers Harvey Cohn, David and Gregory Chudnovsky, and Melvyn B. Nathanson. It is held at the Graduate Center, CUNY. Overview The New York Number Theory Seminar began in January 1982 and was originally organized by number theorists Harvey Cohn, David and Gregory Chudnovsky ,and Melvyn B. Nathanson. Since the retirement of Cohn, Nathanson is the sole organizer. The seminar also organizes an annual Workshop on Combinatorial and Additive Number Theory (CANT) at the Graduate Center, CUNY. Seminar
A seminar is a form of academic instruction, either at an academic institution or offered by a commercial or professional organization. It has the function of bringing together small groups for recurring meetings, focusing each time on some particular subject, in which everyone present is requested to participate. This is often accomplished through an ongoing Socratic dialogue with a seminar leader or instructor, or through a more formal presentation of research. It is essentially a place where assigned readings are discussed, questions can be raised and debates can be conducted. Number theory (or arithmetic or higher arithmetic in older usage) is a branch of pure mathematics devoted primarily to the study of the integers and arithmetic function, integer-valued functions. David Volfovich Chudnovsky (born January 22, 1947 in Kyiv) and Gregory Volfovich Chudnovsky (born April 17, 1952 in Kyiv) are Ukrainian-born American mathematicians and engineers known for their world-record mathematical calculations and developing the Chudnovsky algorithm used to calculate the digits of with extreme precision. Lecture Notes In Mathematics
''Lecture Notes in Mathematics'' is a book series in the field of mathematics, including articles related to both research and teaching. It was established in 1964 and was edited by A. Dold, Heidelberg and B. Eckmann, Zürich. Its publisher is Springer Science+Business Media (formerly Springer-Verlag). The intent of the series is to publish not only lecture notes, but results from seminars and conferences, more quickly than the several-years-long process of publishing polished journal papers in mathematics. In order to speed the publication process, early volumes of the series (before electronic publishing) were reproduced photographically from typewritten manuscripts. With the adoption of the Common Core Standards by 45 states, mathematics content across the country is moving into closer agreement for each grade level.
