The New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) is the department of the New York state government responsible for public health. It is headed by Health Commissioner Mary T. Horace White (October 7, 1865 – November 27, 1943) was an American lawyer and politician from New York. He was the 37th Governor of New York from October 6, 1910 to December 31, 1910. Benjamin Barker Odell Jr. (January 14, 1854May 9, 1926) was an American businessman and politician who served as the 34th Governor of New York from 1901 to 1904. Early life Born in Newburgh, New York, in 1854, Odell's father, Benjamin B. Odell Sr., was a leading businessman who served twelve years as the city's mayor. Odell studied at Bethany College in West Virginia, and at the Columbia College of Columbia University. While he would have graduated in 1877, Odell dropped out of school in his junior year, returning to Newburgh to help in his father's business. Odell worked his way up to head his father's ice business, starting as the driver of an ice delivery truck, earning $2 per day. Daniel Lewis (January 17, 1846 – March 22, 1919) was an American physician who served as the first Commissioner of the New York State Department of Health. Life Lewis was born on January 17, 1846, in Alfred, New York, the son of Alfred Lewis and Lucy Langworthy. Lewis was attending Alfred Academy when the American Civil War started, and he served in the Union Navy from 1864 to 1865. After the War, he returned to his studies, graduating from Alfred University in 1869. He then attended a course in the New York University Medical School, followed by the College of Physicians and Surgeons. He graduated from the latter school in 1871. After practicing medicine in Andover for two years, he opened an office in New York City and became a prominent physician and surgeon in the city. 1881–1896 Cholera Pandemic
The fifth cholera pandemic (1881–1896) was the fifth major international outbreak of cholera in the 19th century. It spread throughout Asia and Africa, and reached parts of France, Germany, Russia, and South America. It claimed 200,000 lives in Russia between 1893 and 1894; and 90,000 in Japan between 1887 and 1889. The 1892 outbreak in Hamburg, Germany was the biggest European outbreak; about 8,600 people died in that city. Although many residents held the city government responsible for the virulence of the epidemic (leading to cholera riots in 1893), it continued with practices largely unchanged. This was the last serious European cholera outbreak of the century. Pope Leo XIII authorized the construction of a hospice inside the Vatican for afflicted residents of nearby Roman neighbourhoods.
