The New York City Breakers are an original B-boy group in early 1980s that was established in the Bronx borough of New York City. The group originally consisted of members from Wildstyle and "Floor Master Crew" History The New York City Breakers are a breaking crew from the Kingsbridge section of the Bronx originally known as the Floor Masters Michael Holman an up-and-coming filmmaker who promoted Hip-Hop parties at a night club called Negril. He Grew bored of watching the same breaking crew dance and wanted to host a Breaking Battle. The Floor Master Crew accepted an invitation in 1982 offering to battle rival crew at club Negril. B-boy
Breakdancing, also called breaking or b-boying/b-girling, is an athletic style of street dance originating from the African American and Puerto Rican communities in the United States. While diverse in the amount of variation available in the dance, breakdancing mainly consists of four kinds of movement: toprock, downrock, power moves and freezes. Breakdancing is typically set to songs containing drum breaks, especially in hip-hop, funk, soul music and breakbeat music, although modern trends allow for much wider varieties of music along certain ranges of tempo and beat patterns. The modern dance elements of breakdancing originated among the poor youth of New York during the early 1970s, where it was introduced as breaking. Gladys Maria Knight (born May 28, 1944), known as the "Empress of Soul", is an American singer, actress and businesswoman. Katherine Dunham
Katherine Mary Dunham (June 22, 1909 – May 21, 2006) was an American dancer, choreographer, anthropologist, and social activist. Dunham had one of the most successful dance careers of the 20th century, and directed her own dance company for many years. Kennedy Center Honors
The Kennedy Center Honors are annual honors given to those in the performing arts for their lifetime of contributions to American culture. They have been presented annually since 1978, culminating each December in a gala celebrating five honorees in the Kennedy Center Opera House in Washington, D.C. While the awards are primarily given to individuals, they have occasionally been given to couples or musical groups, as well as to one Broadway musical and one television show. ''Graffiti Rock'' was a hip-hop based television program, originally aired on June 28, 1984. Intended as an ongoing series, the show only received one pilot episode and aired on WPIX channel 11 in New York City and 88 markets around the country, to good Nielsen ratings. ''Graffiti Rock'' resembled a hip hop version of the popular television dance shows at the time such as ''Soul Train'' and ''American Bandstand''. The show was created and hosted by Michael Holman, who was the manager of the popular break-dancing crew, the New York City Breakers. ''Body Rock'' is a 1984 American dance film directed by Marcelo Epstein. Lorenzo Lamas stars as Chilly, a young man "from the streets" with a talent for break-dancing. The film received negative reviews from critics and was a failure at the box office. Lamas was nominated for Worst Actor at the 5th Golden Raspberry Awards for his performance, but lost to Sylvester Stallone in ''Rhinestone''. Also nominated was the song "Smooth Talker"—one of two songs in the film performed by Lamas. The other, "Fools Like Me", remains Lamas's one single to date to crack the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 chart; it peaked at number 85 in January 1985. ''Beat Street'' is a 1984 American drama dance film featuring New York City hip hop culture of the early 1980s.
