New York City's 43rd City Council district is one of 51 districts in the New York City Council. It has been represented by Democrat Justin Brannan since 2018, succeeding term-limited fellow Democrat Vincent Gentile. Geography District 43 is based in Bay Ridge and other neighborhoods along Brooklyn's southwestern waterfront, including Dyker Heights, Bath Beach, and parts of Bensonhurst. Dyker Beach Park and Golf Course is located within the district, as is Calvert Vaux Park. The district overlaps with Brooklyn Community Boards 10, 11, and 13, and with New York's 10th and 11th congressional districts. Community Boards Of New York City
The community boards of the New York City government are the appointed advisory groups of the community districts of the five boroughs. There are currently 59 community districts: twelve in the Bronx, eighteen in Brooklyn, twelve in Manhattan, fourteen in Queens, and three in Staten Island. They advise on land use and zoning, participate in the city budget process, and address service delivery in their district. Regarding land use they are only advisory and mostly serve as mobilizing institutions for communities opposed to specific projects. The City Charter also allows boards to submit their own plans for the development, growth, and improvement of their communities. Community boards each have up to 50 volunteer members appointed by the local borough president, half from nominations by City Council members representing the community district (''i.e.'', whose council districts cover part of the community district). Khader El-Yateem (Arabic: خضر اليتيم ; born October 20, 1968) is a Palestinian-American community organizer and Lutheran pastor. He is the Director for Evangelical Mission Assistant to the Bishop (South Region) Florida-Bahamas Synod, ELCA. El-Yateem was a candidate for New York City Council. Early life and education El-Yateem was born in Beit Jala in the Bethlehem Governorate in 1968, and emigrated to the United States in 1992. He holds a Master of Divinity from the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia, and a bachelor's degree from the Evangelical Theological Seminary in Cairo, Egypt. Career El-Yateem is the founder of Salam Arabic Lutheran Church. It is a congregation primarily consisting of recent immigrant Arab Christians, many of whom fled from the unrest in the Middle East. 2021 New York City Council Election
The 2021 New York City Council election were held on November 2, 2021. The primary elections were held on June 22, 2021. There were several special elections for seats vacated in 2020 and early 2021; these special elections were the first to use ranked-choice voting in city council elections after it was approved by a ballot question in 2019. Due to redistricting after the 2020 Census, candidates also ran for two-year terms instead of four-year terms for the first time, stemming from the New York City Charter overhaul in 1989. New York's 11th Congressional District
New York's 11th congressional district is a congressional district for the United States House of Representatives in New York City. The 11th district includes all of Staten Island and parts of southern Brooklyn, including the neighborhoods of Bay Ridge, Bath Beach, Dyker Heights, south western Gravesend, western Sheepshead Bay, and parts of southern Bensonhurst. The 11th District is currently represented by Republican Nicole Malliotakis, who is currently the only Republican to represent any part of New York City in Congress.
