New World Island
New World Island is an island in Notre Dame Bay, just off the coast of Newfoundland (island), Newfoundland in the Canada, Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The island is connected to Newfoundland by a causeway. The prominent communities on the island are Summerford, Newfoundland and Labrador, Summerford, Virgin Arm-Carter's Cove, Fairbanks-Hillgrade, Moreton's Harbour, Newville, Newfoundland and Labrador, Newville, Cobb's Arm, Newfoundland and Labrador, Cobb's Arm and Herring Neck. There are also several small fishing villages on the western end of the island, and some of its land is set aside as Dildo Run Provincial Park. A prevailing theory holds that the island's name commemorates the 1523–24 expedition of Giovanni da Verrazzano that visited the coast of Newfoundland (among other places) and established the coast to be part of the New World rather than Asia. Herring Neck is a local service district and designated place in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is on the northeastern extremity of New World Island, Notre Dame Bay. The community encompasses several small contiguous communities such as Merritt's Harbour, Hatchet Harbour, Salt Harbour, and Sunnyside. Dildo Run Provincial Park is a provincial park located on New World Island, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. It was opened to the public in 1967. The nearest major town is Twillingate. There are 55 campsites, each with a picnic table, fireplace, garbage can, and room for a vehicle. Fifteen picnic sites offer a view of the ocean.
