New Star Basketball Club is a Burundian basketball club. The team plays in the National League of Burundi, and has won the championship in 2021. One of New Stars' most notable players has been Guibert Nijimbere. Basketball Africa League New Star qualified for the 2022 BAL Qualifying Tournaments. There, New Star won its first four games. The winning streak was finally stopped in the semi-finals by South Sudan's Cobra Sport who won the decisive match 78-76. Burundian Basketball Championship
The Burundian Basketball Championship (in French: Championnat National du Burundi), for sponsorship reason the Viva Basketball League, is a semi-professional basketball league that is the highest level of the sport in Burundi. The league is organised by the Fédération de Basketball du Burundi (FEBABU). In 2022, the league signed a 4-year sponsorship contract with malt drink producer Viva; the winners of the league win a prize money of 10 million FBu (approximately $4,800). Guibert Nijimbere
Joe Guibert Nijimbere (born 26 December 1996) is a Burundian basketball player for Kepler and the Burundi national basketball team. Early life Nijimbere was born on 26 December 1996 in Mutanga-Nord, a suburb of Bujumbura, the largest city in the country. He was the second of 9 children. He grew up attending his father's Sunday league basketball games with his three brothers, all of whom ended up playing the sport. Career Starting his career for New Star in 2013, he became the youngest player to play at Burundi's highest level at the age of 16. In 2017, Nijimbere signed with IPRC-Kigali in Rwanda. In 2019, he joined Patriots BBC and was part of the team that qualified for the 2020 BAL season. He was named MVP of the 2019 Genocide Memorial Tournament and won the three-point contest in that year's All-Star game. The qualification tournaments for the 2022 BAL season were the qualification rounds for the second season of the Basketball Africa League (BAL). The tournaments began on 19 October 2021 and ended 16 December 2021. The competition consisted out of two stages: the first round and the elite 16. Six teams advanced to the group phase of the BAL. Cobra Sports Club, commonly known as Cobra Sport, are a South Sudanese basketball team based in Juba, South Sudan. The team was established in 2017 and plays in the Central Equatoria State Basketball Association (CESBA). Cobra has won three national championships. Cobra played in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) during the 2022 season. History The sports club was founded in 2014 by Biardit Company Limited. The basketball team was established in 2017. Basketball Africa League
The Basketball Africa League (BAL) is Africa's premier men's basketball league. The league consists of twelve teams, each qualified through their domestic competition, similar to the format of the UEFA Champions League. The league is a joint effort between the National Basketball Association (NBA) and International Basketball Federation (FIBA) with sponsorship from Nike, Inc., Nike, Air Jordan and Pepsi. Its 2021 BAL season, inaugural season started with the qualifying rounds in October 2019 and the regular season in May 2021.
