New South Wales Rugby League Season 1982
The 1982 NSWRFL season was the 75th season of professional rugby league football in Australia and saw the New South Wales Rugby Football League’s first expansion since 1967 with the introduction of the first two clubs from outside the Sydney area in over half a century: the Canberra Raiders and the Illawarra Steelers. Thus a total of 14 clubs (including 6 Sydney-based foundation teams, another 6 from Sydney, one from greater New South Wales, and one from the Australian Capital Territory) competed for the J.J. Giltinan Shield and newly-created Winfield Cup during the season, which culminated in a grand final between the Parramatta and Manly-Warringah clubs. This season, NSWRFL teams also competed for the 1982 KB Cup which was won by Manly-Warringah. 1982 KB Cup
The 1982 KB Cup was the 9th edition of the NSWRFL Midweek Cup, a NSWRFL-organised national club Rugby League tournament between the leading clubs and representative teams from the NSWRFL, the BRL, the CRL, the QRL and the NZRL. A total of 18 teams from across Australia and New Zealand played 24 matches in a round-robin format with teams playing a round of games with the 2 lowest performing teams being eliminated before the remaining teams played another round of games with the top 8 teams advanced to a knockout stage, with the matches being held midweek during the premiership season. Kevin Hastings
Kevin "Horrie" Hastings (born 5 January 1957) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played as a and during the 1970s and 1980s. Hastings played for the Eastern Suburbs in the New South Wales Rugby League (NSWRL), making 239 appearances for the club from his debut 1976 until his last match in 1987. He has been described as a stalwart of the club, and has won numerous individual accolades, including the Rothmans Medal (1981) and was Dally M Halfback of the Year for three consecutive years (1980, 1981 and 1982). He also played for English side Barrow during 1986–87. Early life Hastings was born in the Sydney suburb of Surry Hills. ''Rugby League Week'' (frequently abbreviated to RLW) was the highest selling Australian rugby league magazine, ahead of major competitor ''Big League''. It was published weekly (on Wednesdays) during the Australian rugby league season, which runs from March to late September (roughly corresponding to the southern hemisphere autumn and winter). The magazine was headquartered in Sydney. History Rugby League Week was launched in 1970. In 2001 the magazine's name was changed to ''League Week'', to avoid confusion with rugby union. Ray Price (rugby)
Raymond Alan Price (born 4 March 1953) is an Australian former dual-code international rugby union and rugby league footballer. He was nicknamed “Mr Perpetual Motion” for his hard, intimidating style of play in league at lock forward. Price played rugby league for Sydney's Parramatta Eels club, with whom he won four NSWRL premierships, a Dally M Medal and a Rothmans Medal. He also played in State of Origin for New South Wales. Dally M Award
The Dally M Awards are the official annual player awards for the National Rugby League competition. As well as honouring the player of the year, who received the Dally M Medal, awards are also given to the premier player in each position, the best coach, the best captain, representative player of the year and the most outstanding rookie of the season. The awards are named in honour of Australian former rugby league great Herbert Henry "Dally" Messenger. History The awards were introduced in 1979 by News Limited. Lee Pomfret
Lee Pomfret (born 8 December 1957) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1970s and 1980s. Pomfret was a foundation player for Illawarra playing in the club's first game. Background Pomfret was born in Canterbury, New South Wales and played his junior rugby league for the Peakhurst Hawks. Playing career Pomfret made his first grade debut for St George in Round 1 1977 against Penrith at Kogarah Oval. St George went on to win the premiership in 1977 but Pomfret was not a member of the grand final winning team. In 1980, Pomfret joined Canterbury-Bankstown and made 10 appearances in his first year at the club. Bob Cooper (rugby League)
Robert Cooper (31 August 1955 – 9 December 2022) was an Australian professional footballer. He played rugby league in the New South Wales Rugby League. In 1982, Cooper was suspended for the equal-longest period in rugby league history. Cooper played rugby league for Western Suburbs Magpies and North Sydney Bears and, in 1980, was selected in the New South Wales team for the inaugural game in the State of Origin. He played primarily in the back row. Cooper was named in the Western Suburbs Magpies Team of the Eighties, in the second-row. In 1982, Cooper was suspended for the equal-longest period in rugby league history, of fifteen months, after he ran in to join a brawl and left three Illawarra Steelers players flattened during a match at Wollongong showground. Henson Park
Henson Park is a multi purpose sports ground in Marrickville, New South Wales, Australia. History It was established in 1933 on the site of Daley's brick pit, Thomas Daley operated the Standsure Brick Company from 1886 to 1914. The brickworks occupied 9 acres (3.6 ha) and employed approximately 60 people. When the brickworks closed the pits filled with rain and ground water. The largest waterhole was known as "The Blue Hole"and was 40 to 80 feet in places (12.2 to 24.4 metres). Marrickville Council purchased the site in 1923 as it was a serious danger. Unfortunately nine young boys drowned in the old water hole. In 1932 a grant was received to level the ground and work commenced as part of the Unemployment Relief Scheme. The oval is set within a shallow hollow, formed by the upper edges of the former brickpit. The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs are an Australian professional rugby league football club based in Belmore, a suburb in the Canterbury-Bankstown region of Sydney. They compete in the NRL Telstra Premiership, as well as competitions facilitated by the New South Wales Rugby League, including the Canterbury Cup NSW, the Jersey Flegg Cup, Harvey Norman Women's Premiership, Tarsha Gale Cup, S. Newtown Jets
The Newtown Jets are an Australian rugby league football club based in Newtown, a suburb of Sydney's inner west. They currently compete in the NSW Cup competition, having left the top grade after the 1983 NSWRFL season. Arthur Summons
Arthur James Summons (13 December 1935 – 16 May 2020) was an Australian representative rugby union and rugby league player, a dual-code rugby international fly-half or five-eighth. He captained the Australian national rugby league team in five undefeated test matches from 1962 until 1964 and later also coached the side. Background Summons was born in Paddington, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
