Lee Pomfret
Lee Pomfret (born 8 December 1957) is an Australian former professional rugby league footballer who played in the 1970s and 1980s. Pomfret was a foundation player for Illawarra playing in the club's first game. Background Pomfret was born in Canterbury, New South Wales and played his junior rugby league for the Peakhurst Hawks. Playing career Pomfret made his first grade debut for St George in Round 1 1977 against Penrith at Kogarah Oval. St George went on to win the premiership in 1977 but Pomfret was not a member of the grand final winning team. In 1980, Pomfret joined Canterbury-Bankstown and made 10 appearances in his first year at the club. Pomfret played in 2 finals games but was not selected in the grand final team which defeated Eastern Suburbs to win their first premiership in 38 years. Canterbury, New South Wales
Canterbury is a suburb extending across south-western Sydney and the Inner West, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. Canterbury is located south-west of the Sydney central business district in the City of Canterbury-Bankstown. The former City of Canterbury took its name from the suburb, however its administrative centre was located in the adjacent suburb of Campsie, which is also a large commercial centre. History The original inhabitants of the area were the Bediagal clan of the Eora nation. The first European land grant in this suburb was of to a "very good, pious, inoffensive man", the Reverend Richard Johnson (1753-1827), the colony's first chaplain, in 1793. He called his grant Canterbury Vale, as a tribute to Canterbury in England, and the suburb took its name from the farm. The farm extended over the area of modern-day Canterbury and Ashbury suburbs. Bob Cooper (rugby League)
Robert Cooper (31 August 1955 – 9 December 2022) was an Australian professional footballer. He played rugby league in the New South Wales Rugby League. In 1982, Cooper was suspended for the equal-longest period in rugby league history. Cooper played rugby league for Western Suburbs Magpies and North Sydney Bears and, in 1980, was selected in the New South Wales team for the inaugural game in the State of Origin. He played primarily in the back row. Cooper was named in the Western Suburbs Magpies Team of the Eighties, in the second-row. In 1982, Cooper was suspended for the equal-longest period in rugby league history, of fifteen months, after he ran in to join a brawl and left three Illawarra Steelers players flattened during a match at Wollongong showground. Canterbury-Bankstown is a customary region of Sydney, Australia, in the south-western suburbs. The area is located around the Bankstown railway line, to the west of the St George region and to the south of the Inner West region. WIN Stadium
Wollongong Showground, known as WIN Stadium for sponsorship reasons, is a multi-purpose stadium located in Wollongong, Australia. The stadium was officially opened in 1911. From 1982 until 1998 it played host to every home match for the Illawarra Steelers NRL team, and is still the team's home ground in the lower grade competitions. It is now used as one home ground of the St George Illawarra Dragons rugby league side and Wollongong Wolves of the National Premier Leagues NSW. History Origin The stadium was originally used primarily for agricultural shows and hosted a greyhound racing track as well, the name of the venue prior to 1911 was the Wollongong Showground.
