New Mexico State Aggies Football
The New Mexico State Aggies football team represents New Mexico State University in NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) college football as an independent. Although New Mexico State is a member of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) for other sports, the WAC ceased to offer football as a sport after the 2012 season due to a realignment in which most of its football-playing members left for other conferences. After spending the 2013 season as an independent and 2014 to 2017 as a football–only member of the Sun Belt Conference, New Mexico State began playing as an independent again with the 2018 football season. On November 5, 2021, New Mexico State announced it would be joining Conference USA in all sports including football starting in 2023. Mario Moccia is the current director of athletics for New Mexico State University. He previously served as athletic director for Southern Illinois University Carbondale from 2006 to 2014, as an associate athletic director at the University of Missouri from 1998 to 2006, as an associate athletic director at Southwest Texas State University from 1997 to 1998, and as an assistant athletic director at the University of New Mexico from 1993 to 1997. The NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), formerly known as Division I-A, is the highest level of college football in the United States. The FBS consists of the largest schools in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). As of 2022, there are 10 conferences and 131 schools in FBS. College football is one of the most popular spectator sports throughout much of the United States. The top schools generate tens of millions of dollars in yearly revenue. Sun Bowl
The Sun Bowl is a college football bowl game that has been played since 1935 in the southwestern United States at El Paso, Texas. Along with the Sugar Bowl and Orange Bowl, it is the second-oldest bowl game in the country, behind the Rose Bowl. Usually held near the end of December, games are played at the Sun Bowl stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at El Paso. Since 2011, it has featured teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and the Pac-12 Conference. Since 2019, the game has been sponsored by Kellogg's and is officially known as the Tony the Tiger Sun Bowl, after the mascot for the company's Frosted Flakes cereal. Jerry Hines
Gerald H. Hines (1903 – April 28, 1963) was an American football and basketball player, coach and athletic director at New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts (New Mexico A&M), now known as New Mexico State University. Hines led the Aggies to multiple successful football and basketball seasons during the 1930s. Hines was born in Mesilla, New Mexico in 1903 with twin brother, Harold, to Dr. Lemuel Hines and his wife, Minnie Hankins. Hines attended Las Cruces Union High School from 1918 to 1922 and New Mexico A&M from 1922 to 1926. Hines was a captain of the Aggie basketball team and a quarterback for the Aggie football team. Hines became head basketball and football coach at New Mexico A&M in 1929, and athletics director in 1930. Both teams excelled under Hines. Hardin–Simmons University
Hardin–Simmons University (HSU) is a private Baptist university in Abilene, Texas. It is affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas (Southern Baptist Convention). History Hardin–Simmons University was founded as Abilene Baptist College in 1891 by the Sweetwater Baptist Association and a group of cattlemen and pastors who sought to bring Christian higher education to the Southwest. The purpose of the school would be "to lead students to Christ, teach them of Christ, and train them for Christ." The original land was donated to the university by rancher C.W. Merchant. Dutch Bergman
Arthur J. "Dutch" Bergman (February 23, 1895 – August 18, 1972) was an American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts, now New Mexico State University, from 1920 to 1922 and at The Catholic University of America from 1930 to 1940, compiling a career college football record of 71–36–5. Bergman was the head coach of the National Football League's Washington Redskins for one season in 1943, tallying a mark of 6–3–1. During his tenure, the Cardinals went 59–31–4, including a victory in the 1936 Orange Bowl and a tie in the 1940 Sun Bowl. Conference USA
Conference USA (C-USA or CUSA) is an intercollegiate athletic conference whose current member institutions are located within the Southern United States. The conference participates in the NCAA's Division I in all sports. C-USA's offices are located in Dallas, Texas. History C-USA was founded in 1995 by the merger of the Metro Conference and Great Midwest Conference, two Division I conferences that did not sponsor football. However, the merger did not include either Great Midwest member Dayton or Metro members VCU and Virginia Tech.
