New Harbour, Fortune Bay
New Harbour is an abandoned town located within Fortune Bay in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada that had a peak population of 24 in 1945. It is not to be confused with New Harbour, Trinity Bay and New Harbour on the south-west coast of Newfoundland. History Located near the resettled community of Femme in Fortune Bay, Trammer was first settled in the early to mid 19 century and was first recorded in the Newfoundland census of 1857 where one settler had been born in England. By 1869, there were 19 residents, with the surnames Matthews, Pauls and Rideout. At that time, residents of the small community would only receive their mail every two weeks from the main Fortune Bay economic hub of Harbour Breton. People of the community relied heavily on the herring fishery which was a prosperous venture in the mid to late 19th century in this area. The Newfoundland Time Zone (NT) is a geographic region that keeps time by subtracting 3.5 hours from Coordinated Universal Time ( UTC) during standard time, resulting in UTC−03:30; or subtracting 2.5 hours during daylight saving time. History The first telephone system was installed in Newfoundland in 1885, but domestic long-distance calls within the Dominion of Newfoundland could be placed on a limited basis only in 1921. Harbour Breton is a small fishing community on the Connaigre Peninsula in Fortune Bay, on the south coast of the island of Newfoundland in Canada. It is the largest center on the Connaigre Peninsula and was long considered the unofficial capital of Fortune Bay. During the 1960s many communities were resettled into Harbour Breton.
