New Generation Artists
BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme (also known as the NGA scheme) was launched in 1999 by Adam Gatehouse as part of the BBC's commitment to young musical talent. Each autumn six or seven young artists at the beginning of careers on the national and international music scenes join the scheme for a two-year period. Since 2006 a jazz artist has also been invited every other year. The artists are given performance opportunities, including Radio 3 studio recordings, appearances and recordings with the BBC Orchestras and appearances at several music festivals, including the Cheltenham International Festival and the BBC Proms. They also regularly appear at the Edinburgh Festival, Aldeburgh Festival, East Neuk Festival, Gregynog Festival, Lufthansa Festival of Baroque Music and the York Early Music Festival. Jonathan Lemalu
Jonathan Fa'afetai Lemalu (born 1976) is a New Zealand bass baritone opera singer. Born to Samoan parents who had emigrated to New Zealand, he was educated in Dunedin. His first singing teacher was Honor McKellar, who began teaching him while he attended Otago Boys' High School. He studied both Law and Music at the University of Otago, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws in 1999. Lemalu studied at the Royal College of Music (RCM), where he won the college's gold medal award in 2002. He won the prestigious London-based Kathleen Ferrier Award (previously won by Malvina Major in 1966) that same year. He was a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist from 2002 to 2004. He was the 2004 winner of the Royal Philharmonic Society's award for Young Artist of the Year. Armida Quartet
The Armida Quartet, named after the eponymous opera by Joseph Haydn, is a German string quartet. The ensemble includes Martin Funda (violin), Johanna Staemmler (violin), Teresa Schwamm (viola) and Peter-Philipp Staemmler (violoncello). History The quartet was founded in Berlin in 2006 and studied with members of the Artemis Quartet. Master classes with the Alban Berg Quartet, the Guarneri Quartet and Arditti Quartet rounded off their training. The four musicians became known through their success at the ARD International Music Competition in 2012, where the Armida Quartet was awarded 1st prize, the audience prize and six other special prizes. Ashley Riches is a British operatic baritone. Riches studied at Winchester College and King's College, Cambridge, where he graduated in English and sang in Choir of King's College, Cambridge, King's College Choir under Stephen Cleobury. He continued his studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he was a finalist for the Gold Medal of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Gold Medal. From 2012 to 2014, Riches was a Jette Parker Young Artist at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. In his Royal Opera House main stage debut he sang a duet with Roberto Alagna in a gala concert. Amatis Trio
The Amatis Trio is a piano trio formed in 2014 in Amsterdam. It is one of the few full-time piano trios in Europe. The ensemble was named a BBC New Generation Artist in 2016 and named in the ECHO Rising Stars in 2018 after being selected by Konzerthaus Dortmund, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden and Kölner Philharmonie. In 2019, the trio was appointed Resident Chamber Ensemble at Cambridge University. The Amatis Trio now plays at major festivals such as the BBC Proms, Edingburgh International Festival and concert venues including Konzerthaus Berlin, Wigmore Hall London, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg and Alte Oper Frankfurt. Katharina Konradi
Katharina Konradi (born 13 June 1988) is a Kyrgyzstani operatic soprano based in Germany, at the Hamburg State Opera from 2018. She has performed at major opera houses, especially as Mozart's Susanna and Zdenka in ''Arabella'', and at the Bayreuth Festival. She is also known as a lieder singer with a broad repertoire including contemporary music, performed at Wigmore Hall in London among others. Anastasia Kobekina (russian: Анастасия Кобекина; born 26 August 1994) is a Russian cellist. In 2019, she won third prize at the 16th International Tchaikovsky Competition. Life and career Kobekina was born in 1994 in Yekaterinburg, Russia, into a family of musicians and received her first cello lessons at the age of four. In 2006, she was accepted into the Moscow Conservatory and in 2016 continued her education with Jens Peter Maintz at the Berlin University of the Arts. BIS Records is a record label founded in 1973 by Robert von Bahr. It is located in Åkersberga, Sweden. BIS focuses on classical music, both contemporary and early, especially works that are not already well represented by existing recordings. The company has recorded the complete works of Sibelius.
