The New England Auto Racers Hall of Fame is a hall of fame for racing-related people in the New England region of the United States. NEAR was established in 1981. The New England Auto Racers Hall of Fame was established in 1998 by the New England Antique Racers. Johnny Thomson
John A. Thomson (April 9, 1922 – September 24, 1960) was an American racecar driver. Thomson was nicknamed "the Flying Scot." He won several championships in midgets and sprint cars before competing in Championship Car (now IndyCar) racing. He won the pole position for the 1959 Indianapolis 500. Background Thomsom was born on April 9, 1922 to William and Marion Ross Thomson. He graduated from Lowell High School then the New England Aircraft School. He served in the United States Air Force as a crew chief during World War II in Corsica and Italy between 1942 and 1945 on a B-25 bomber. Thomson was awarded five service stars and the Distinguished Air Force Medal. Thomson met his future wife Evelyn Peterson in 1951. Three popular American sports were invented in New England. Basketball was invented by James Naismith, a Canadian, in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1891. Volleyball was invented by William G. Ron Bouchard
Ronald R. Bouchard (November 23, 1948December 10, 2015) was an American NASCAR driver who was the 1981 NASCAR Winston Cup Rookie of the Year. His brother Ken Bouchard was the 1988 NASCAR Winston Cup Rookie of the Year. His father-in-law, Ed Flemke Sr., and brother-in-law, Ed Flemke Jr., were also NASCAR Modified racers. Local driving career Ron Bouchard began racing career at Brookline Speedway as a substitute driver in 1963 by replacing the ill driver for his father's car. After high school he began racing in his father's car, and he rapidly moved up the ranks to late models at Seekonk Speedway. He claimed five consecutive track championships from 1967 to 1971. He began racing at other local tracks in the Camaro, and he was noticed by Bob Johnson. Fred DeSarro
Frederick John DeSarro (July 3, 1937 - November 1, 1978) was an American racecar driver. He was the 1970 NASCAR National Modified Champion. In NASCAR's Modified All-Time Top 10 drivers, he was ranked eighth. Biography Career Fred DeSarro was a successful hydroplane racer as a late teenager in the Rhode Island area. He was also raced go-karts, drag raced and was a competitive bowler before turning to auto racing. Fred started his stock car racing career at the then Waterford Speedbowl driving Bob "Slim" Ross' #222 'Bounty Hunter' car. The team then moved over to the Norwood Arena Speedway by the mid 1960's. Ross' team folded soon after and DeSarro built his own #11 Sportsman coupe. He won the 1967 Sportsman Track Championship at Norwood. He finished runner-up to the NASCAR Modified Championship in 1968. Ralph Moody
Ralph Moody (September 10, 1917 – June 9, 2004) was an American stock car racer. He eventually became a team co-owner of Holman Moody. Background He built his first Model T Ford race car in 1935, and ran it on nights and weekends. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II, and drove a tank under the command of General George S. Patton. He married his wife Mitzi in 1949, and they moved to Florida so that he could race all year. While still living in Massachusetts, after World War II, Ralph Moody was an active midget chauffeur in the now-defunct Bay State Midget Racing Association. Denny Zimmerman (born December 14, 1940, Glastonbury, Connecticut), is a retired American racing driver. Zimmerman raced in the USAC Champ Car series from 1968 to 1972 with 16 career starts, including the 1971 and 1972 Indianapolis 500. Robert Santos III (born October 3, 1985) is an American professional racing driver from Franklin, Massachusetts. He graduated in 2004 from Tri-County Regional Vocational Technical High School. Santos, nicknamed "Bobby New England", is the grandson of Bobby Santos, a former modified racer. His sister, Erica Santos, is also a racecar driver.
