Walla Walla Football Club
The Walla Walla Football Club was an Australian rules football club based in Walla Walla that played in the Hume Football League in southern New South Wales. The club's nickname is the Hoppers (short for grasshopper), the guernsey design consisted of green and white stripes on the front with an all green rear. Their home ground was the Walla Walla Sportsground in Walla Walla. In 2016, they merged with the Rand-Walbundrie Football Club to form the Rand Walbundrie Walla Giants. History The club was originally formed in 1903 and played ad hoc matches against other clubs in the district. However it did not participate in regular competition until 1910, when it began to compete in various associations against other local clubs. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Points are scored by kicking the oval ball between the central goal posts (worth six points), or between a central and outer post (worth one point, otherwise known as a "behind"). The Sydney Swans are a professional Australian rules football club based in Sydney, New South Wales. The men's team competes in the Australian Football League (AFL), and the women's team in the AFL Women's (AFLW). The Swans also field a reserves men's team in the Victorian Football League (VFL). The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Through the AFL Commission, the AFL also serves as the sport's governing body and is responsible for controlling the laws of the game. The Ovens and Murray Football Netball League (O&MFNL) is an Australian rules football and netball competition containing ten clubs based in north-eastern Victoria, Australia, Victoria, the southern Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia, New South Wales and the Ovens and Murray area. The name comes from the Ovens River, the river in the part of north-eastern Victoria covered by the league, and the Murray River, which separates Victoria and New South Wales. The league features three grades in the Australian rules football competition, with these being First-Grade, Reserve-Grade and Under 18s. Fred Goldsmith (Australian Footballer)
Fred Goldsmith (20 August 1932 – 13 April 2017) was an Australian rules footballer who played with South Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Goldsmith as a seventeen year old in 1950, once kicked 29 goals in a match for Spotswood against Kingsville in the Footscray District Football League. His club was zoned to South Melbourne. VFL Career A fireman, Goldsmith started his career in 1951 as a half forward flanker, having been recruited by South Melbourne from Spotswood. In 1952, he was shifted to fullback; and, in 1955, he became the first ever (and so far, only) specialist fullback to win the Brownlow Medal. To the astonishment of all, in 1956, South Melbourne decided to play its 1955 Brownlow Medallist fullback at full-forward. He played at full-forward for the remainder of his career.
