Nevada State Route 401
State Route 401 (SR 401) is a state highway in Pershing County, Nevada. The route, known as Rye Patch Road, serves the Rye Patch State Recreation Area. Route description The western terminus of Rye Patch Road is at a parking lot adjacent to a day use area on the southwestern shore of the Rye Patch Reservoir. From there, SR 401 loops around to head eastward, providing additional campground and recreation area access. The highway follows the southern edge of the reservoir and crosses the Humboldt River on Rye Patch Dam before cutting through mountains and continuing eastward. SR 401 reaches its eastern terminus at Interstate 80/U.S. Route 95, about north-northeast of Lovelock. History SR 401 was added to the state highway system on July 30, 1976. Rye Patch State Recreation Area
Rye Patch State Recreation Area is a state park unit of Nevada, United States, adjoining Rye Patch Reservoir, an impoundment on the Humboldt River, and the smaller Pitt-Taylor Reservoirs. The recreation area is located at the end of State Route 401 (Rye Patch Road), which connects to Interstate 80/U.S. Route 95 about northeast of Lovelock. History The park is located in a part of Nevada that in prehistoric times was under Lake Lahontan. When the lake had receded lower than the present-day reservoir, by about 23,000 years ago, animals such as camels, horses, rabbits, and squirrels would drink from the river, and some of their fossils have been found about north of the dam. Archaeological evidence from Lovelock Cave and elsewhere shows that humans would camp along the Humboldt about 8,000 years ago. Lovelock, Nevada
Lovelock is the county seat of Pershing County, Nevada, United States, in which it is the only incorporated city. It is the namesake of a nearby medium-security men's prison and a Cold War-era gunnery range. Formerly a stop for settlers on their way to California and later a train depot, the town's economy remains based on farming, mining and increasingly on tourism. Pershing County, Nevada
Pershing County is a county in the U.S. state of Nevada. As of the 2020 census, the population was 6,650. Its county seat is Lovelock. The county was named after army general John J. Pershing (1860–1948). It was formed from Humboldt County in 1919, and the last county to be established in Nevada. The Black Rock Desert, location for the annual Burning Man event, is partially in the county. The county is listed as Nevada Historical Marker 17. The marker is at the courthouse in Lovelock. It is located about 22 miles northeast of the town of Lovelock, and is managed by the Pershing County Water Conservation District. The reservoir stores water for the agricultural area surrounding Lovelock, which is at the far downstream reach of the Humboldt, near the Humboldt Sink. Since the Lovelock area receives a mere 5.76 inches of rain annually, agriculture requires irrigation, but the high variability of the Humboldt (which often runs completely dry) means that water storage is necessary for irrigation to be feasible. Rye Patch Settlement The settlement of Rye Patch got its start in the early 1860s, and at one time included a school and boarding house. Humboldt River
The Humboldt River is an extensive river drainage system located in north-central Nevada. It extends in a general east-to-west direction from its headwaters in the Jarbidge, Independence, and Ruby Mountains in Elko County, to its terminus in the Humboldt Sink, approximately 225 direct miles away in northwest Churchill County. Most estimates put the Humboldt River at to long however, due to the extensive meandering nature of the river, its length may be more closely estimated at 380 miles (612 km). Interstate 80 In Nevada
Interstate 80 (I-80) traverses the northern portion of the US state of Nevada. The freeway serves the Reno metropolitan area and passes through the towns of Fernley, Lovelock, Winnemucca, Battle Mountain, Carlin, Elko, Wells, and West Wendover on its way through the state.
