Nevada State Route 231
State Route 231 (SR 231) is an unsigned state highway in Elko County, Nevada, United States. Known as Angel Lake Road, the highway connects Angel Lake to the town of Wells. SR 231 is a Nevada Scenic Byway. Route description SR 231 begins at the Angel Lake fee booth, providing access to the lake and nearby picnic and campground areas. From there, the highway heads in a general eastward direction, descending through switchbacks along the east side of the East Humboldt Range. Once traveling about to clear of the mountains, the road turns more sharply to the north. The final sees the route turn more directly eastward to enter the town of Wells. SR 231 comes to its northern terminus at the intersection of Angel Lake Road and Humboldt Avenue ( SR 223) in Wells, just south of Interstate 80. Angel Lake
Angel Lake is a glacial tarn in the northern part of the East Humboldt Range, in central Elko County in the northeastern part of the state of Nevada. It is located at approximately , and at an elevation of 8378 feet (2553 m). It has an area of approximately 13 acres (5.2 hectares), and a depth of up to 29 feet (9 m). A scenic highway, State Route 231, climbs from Interstate 80's exit 351 in Wells to the eastern shore of the lake. Located at the base of a steep cirque, the lake is surrounded by high cliffs. Wells is a small city in Elko County, in northeast Nevada in the western United States. The population was 1,292 at the 2010 census. Wells is located at the junction of Interstate 80 and U.S. Route 93, approximately east of Elko and is part of the Elko micropolitan area. History The site of Wells began as a place called Humboldt Wells along the trail to California. It was subsequently founded as a railroad town along the original Transcontinental Railroad, and was once a stopover for passenger trains. The Humboldt River has its source in springs and a swampy area just west of the city that today is called Humboldt Wells. In the late 19th century, Humboldt Wells was burning down, and in a frantic plea for help, a telegraph was sent that said, "Wells is burning". East Humboldt Range
The East Humboldt Range is a mountain range in Elko County, Nevada, United States. It is located along the eastern edge of the upper watershed of the Humboldt River, which flows to the southwest from its source just north of the range. The range reaches a maximum elevation of atop Hole in the Mountain Peak. Most of the range is included within the Ruby Mountains Ranger District of the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. In 1989, the United States Congress passed the Nevada Wilderness Protection Act establishing over of the range as the East Humboldt Wilderness. The range takes its name from the Humboldt River. State Route 223 (SR 223) is a state highway in Elko County, Nevada, United States. Co-signed with Interstate 80 Business (I-80 Bus.), it serves the town of Wells. Route description State Route 223 begins at the intersection of Humboldt Avenue and Angel Lake Road ( SR 231) in western Wells. From there, the highway follows Humboldt Avenue northward, crossing underneath Interstate 80 (I-80), curving easterly as the road borders residential areas of the town.
