Area codes 815 and 779 are telephone area codes for most of northern Illinois outside the Chicago and Quad Cities areas. It also serves the Joliet area and some of Chicago’s western and northwestern exurbs. 815 was one of the four original Illinois area codes set up in 1947. It was split in 1957, when most of its western portion, including most of the Illinois side of the Quad Cities, was combined with part of the northern portion of area code 217 to form area code 309. The Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) is a database of name and locative information about more than two million physical and cultural features throughout the United States and its territories, Antarctica, and the associated states of the Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, and Palau.
