Athletes from the Netherlands competed at the Winter Olympic Games for the first time at the 1928 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland. Bobsleigh Men Initially Albert Levy Themans was selected to be part of the team. Due to a heavy strike at his factory, Levy Themans had to withdraw at the last moment. He was replaced by Edwin Teixeira de Mattos. Simon "Siem" Heiden (12 March 1905 – 3 August 1993) was a Dutch speed skater who competed in the 1928 Winter Olympics. He was born in IJsselmonde and died in Rotterdam. Albert Jacobus Levy (8 May 1889 – 24 May 1959; also spelled Levij and Lévy), known as Albert Levy Themans and eventually as Albert Themans, was a Dutch bobsledder, executive, and briefly a political activist. He was the first Dutch athlete to be replaced right before the Winter Olympics. Career Bobsleigh Levy Themans started competing in bobsleigh competitions in the winter of 1922–23. Both as pilot and brakeman, he was successful in winning several prizes outside the Netherlands. He was selected to be part of the four-man event at the 1928 Winter Olympics. Edwin Teixeira de Mattos (28 January 1898 – 15 January 1976) was a Dutch bobsledder. He competed in the four-man event at the 1928 Winter Olympics. Jacques Paul Delprat (17 December 1882 – 17 February 1956) was a Dutch bobsledder. He competed in the four-man event at the 1928 Winter Olympics. Biography Sports When Delprat studied in the Netherlands he was a good rower, winning three times the university championship. Delprat started with bobsleigh in 1908. He competed at Schatzalp, Klosters and Arosa as a brakeman. He won many prizes.
