Neshoba County School District
The Neshoba County School District is a public school district based in Neshoba County, Mississippi (USA). The district headquarters are in Philadelphia, Mississippi. See Philadelphia. The district's physical boundaries include Pearl River and Tucker, the Neshoba County portion of Bogue Chitto, and a small portion of Philadelphia. The tribal public schools in Pearl River, Tucker, and Bogue Chitto are not operated by the Neshoba County School district but by the Choctaw Tribal School System, an entity owned and operated by the sovereign nation of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. Neshoba County, Mississippi
Neshoba County is located in the central part of the U.S. state of Mississippi. As of the 2020 census, the population was 29,087. Its county seat is Philadelphia. It was named after ''Nashoba'', a Choctaw chief. His name means "wolf" in the Choctaw language. The county is known for the Neshoba County Fair and harness horse races. It is home of the Williams Brothers Store, which has been in operation since the early 1900s. In June 1964, civil rights workers James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner were chased down, tortured, and murdered by members of the Ku Klux Klan. They were buried in an earthen dam on private property off of Highway 21; Goodman was still alive. Bogue Chitto, Mississippi
Bogue Chitto is a census-designated place (CDP) situated in Kemper and Neshoba counties, Mississippi. The population was 864 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians Reservation and the population is 93% Choctaw. History Three civil rights workers: James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner were killed by the KKK about 10 miles north of Bogue Chitto on the night of June 21, 1964. Their bodies were discovered buried in an earthen dam on the Old Jolly Farm in Neshoba County, Mississippi in August, 1964. The crime was later described in the 1988 film '' Mississippi Burning''. Choctaw Tribal School System
The Choctaw Tribal School System is a school system based in the community of Choctaw, Mississippi (US). An entity operated by the federally recognized Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians, the district consists of eight schools in three counties: Neshoba, Leake, and Newton. It has a total enrollment of 1,700 to 1,800 students. It is the largest unified and locally controlled Indian school system in the United States. It is affiliated with the Bureau of Indian Education (BIE). The current Director of Schools is Mr. Terry Ben. All eight schools are Title I schools with a majority of students being bilingual, speaking both Choctaw and English. Jeanes Foundation
The Jeanes Foundation, also known as the Negro Rural School Fund or Jeanes Fund, helped support education and vocational programs for African American in rural communities from 1908 to the 1960s. It was founded by Anna T. Jeanes with help from Booker T. Washington in 1907. About The Jeanes Foundation supplied the structure and the method to hire teachers for African Americans in rural communities. Teachers in the program were called supervising industrial teachers, Jeanes supervisors, Jeanes agents, or Jeanes teachers.
