Nelson Gabriel
Nelson Gabriel is a fictional character from the British BBC Radio 4 soap opera ''The Archers'' and was portrayed by Jack May."The Archers : the official companion" Smethurst,W: London, Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1985 Casting May was approached by producer Tony Shryane to join ''The Archers'' as Nelson in 1952. May remained with the show until January 1997 when he was forced to leave due to his declining health. He died later that year. Storylines Nelson was the son of Walter Gabriel ( Chris Gittins), the village carrier and self-appointed "character". He was charged with the Borchester mail-van robbery in 1967, but was eventually acquitted. After spells in London and Spain, in 1980, he ran a wine bar and later an antique shop with Kenton Archer. Finally, he disappeared to South America, where he died from strange circumstances. Jack May
Jack Wynne May (23 April 1922 – 19 September 1997) was an English actor. Early life and education May was born in 1922 in Henley-on-Thames, and was educated at Forest School in Walthamstow. After war service with the Royal Indian Navy in British India, he was offered a place at RADA, but instead went to Merton College, Oxford. Here, with the OUDS, he played parts that included John of Gaunt in '' Richard II'' and Polonius in ''Hamlet''. Career May became familiar on television as the butler William E. Simms in two series of the BBC 1 fantasy/adventure television series ''Adam Adamant Lives!'' from 1966 to 1967. He provided the voice for Igor, long-suffering butler to Count Duckula in the cartoon series of the same name. Tony Shryane
Anthony Joseph Shryane Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, MBE (20 January 1919 – 22 September 2003) was a long-serving producer of radio programmes for the BBC. He was born in Harborne, Birmingham. He was the first producer of ''The Archers'', in which capacity he served for 28 years until his retirement in 1979. He also produced several popular panel games devised with Edward J. Mason, including ''Guilty Party'', ''My Word!'', and ''My Music (radio), My Music''. In 1961, he was appointed Order of the British Empire, MBE for services to broadcasting. Chris Gittins MBE (4 July 1902 – 21 August 1988) was a British character actor who played the role of Walter Gabriel in the long-running BBC radio series ''The Archers''.Smethurst, William (1996) ''The Archers; the true story: the history of radio's most famous programme''. Borchester
Borchester is a fictional town in the BBC Radio 4 radio series ''The Archers''. It is the county town of the fictional county of Borsetshire. According to series tradition it is located 6 miles north-east of Ambridge in the Am Vale and is a historic market and wool town. These typically English country-town features are complemented by more modern additions, such as Underwoods (an upmarket department store), Jaxx bar, which was previously a café both managed by Kenton Archer, and Ambridge Organics, the shop run by Helen Archer, who also makes the Borsetshire Blue cheese sold in Underwoods.
