William Neilson Dairy Limited is a Canadian dairy company owned by Saputo Inc. The company is based in Toronto, Ontario. In the United States, its products are sold under the name Neilson. Its products are sold at Loblaws, Real Canadian Superstore, Giant Tiger, and Fortinos, among others. History The company was founded by William Neilson (1844–1915) in 1893 as one of many independent dairy producers in Canada. Neilsons began as a milk retailer, and then switched to cream and ice cream products. Neilson Dairy became William Neilson Limited in 1907. After the mid-20th century, many smaller companies were taken over by larger corporations. William Neilson was sold to George Weston Limited in 1947. Guelph ( ; 2021 Canadian Census population 143,740) is a city in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. Turtles are a candy made with pecans and caramel dipped in chocolate, with a shape resembling a turtle. The name is trademarked by DeMet's Candy Company. In Canada they are sold under the Nestle brand name. History Turtles were developed in 1918 by Johnson’s Candy Company (which became DeMet’s Candy Company in 1923), after a salesman came into the commissary’s dipping room and showed a candy to one of the dippers, who pointed out that the candy looked like a turtle. Soon after, Johnson’s Candy Company was making the same kind of candy and selling it under the name "Turtles." Hershey's Kisses
Hershey's Kisses is a brand of chocolate first produced by the Hershey Company in 1907. The bite-sized pieces of chocolate have a distinctive conical shape, sometimes described as flat-bottomed teardrops. Hershey's Kisses chocolates are wrapped in squares of lightweight aluminum foil. A narrow strip of paper (called a plume) sticks out from the top of each Hershey's Kiss wrapper. Jersey Milk is a chocolate bar brand consisting of solid milk chocolate. It has a white wrapper with gold writing. The Jersey Milk chocolate bar was introduced in 1924. Originally produced by Neilson Dairy, production was transferred to Cadbury's when Neilson sold the Cadbury's product lines that Neilson had acquired in 1987 back to Cadbury's in 1996, but Jersey Milk packages continue to bear the Neilson brand as of January 2022. A chocolate bar (Commonwealth English) or candy bar (some dialects of American English) is a confection containing chocolate, which may also contain layerings or mixtures that include nuts, fruit, caramel, nougat, and wafers. Crispy Crunch
Crispy Crunch is a hard chocolate bar with a crispy peanut butter flake inside that is made by Cadbury in Canada. Harold Oswin, an employee of Neilson Dairy, William Neilson, developed "Crispy Crunch" in 1930. History Harold Oswin was a candy roller in Neilson's hard candy room and joined the company when he was fourteen years old. Harold was promoted to Candy maker in the late 1920s. He always had wanted to create a candy bar with peanut butter and so when a chocolate bar contest was announced, he submitted his concept. Harold won the contest and received a $5.00 prize. The original recipe called for a log-shaped bar. Williams Neilson management made the decision to flatten the bar to the shape that it is today. Oswin died in the mid-1990s. The brand was repositioned in 1988 by Norm Williams, Director of Marketing. Caramilk
Caramilk is the name of two distinct candy bar products made by Cadbury. Both were introduced in 1968. The Canadian version is a milk candy bar filled with caramel. The Australian version (also available in New Zealand, the UK and Ireland) is a caramel-flavoured white chocolate bar. Canada Variations Variations available, some of them limited editions, include Caramilk made with dark chocolate, maple flavoured, chocolate flavoured, or cappuccino.
