Navia (spirit)
In Slavic paganism there are a variety of female tutelary spirits associated with water. They have been compared to the Greek ''Nymphs'', and they may be either white (beneficent) or black (maleficent). They may be called Boginki, Navki, Rusalki, and Vily. The Proto-Slavic root *''navь-'', which forms one of the names for these beings, means "dead", as these minor goddesses are conceived as the spirits of dead children or young women. The East Slavs followed with the official adoption in 988 by Vladimir the Great of Kievan Rus'. The West Slavs' process of Christianization was more gradual and complicated. The Moravians accepted Christianity as early as 831, the Bohemian dukes followed in 845, Slovaks accepted Christianity somewhere between the years 828 and 863, but the Poles accepted it much late ...
