Navarre, Victoria
Navarre is a town in the Wimmera region of the Australian state of Victoria. The town is in the Shire of Northern Grampians and Shire of Pyrenees local government areas, north west of the state capital, Melbourne and north east of the regional centre of Stawell. At the , Navarre and the surrounding area had a population of 99. Navarre began as the site of an inn established in 1848 alongside a stock route. This was joined by a second inn in 1850. The discovery of gold at Mount Alexander in 1851 saw the inns become a popular stopping point for miners on their way to the diggings. The town was surveyed in 1855 and renamed after the medieval European Kingdom of Navarre. Navarre Post Office opened on 2 February 1856. The town was officially proclaimed in 1861 and in 1868 was host to a store, post office and school. Ripon is a single member electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly. It is a rural electorate based in western Victoria. In 1946 the electoral district of Ripon was first contested but then abolished in the 1955 election after being held by Labor for seven of these years. Wimmera
The Wimmera is a region of the Australian state of Victoria. The district is located within parts of the Loddon Mallee and the Grampians regions; and covers the dryland farming area south of the range of Mallee scrub, east of the South Australia border and north of the Great Dividing Range. It can also be defined as the land within the social catchment of Horsham, its main settlement. Most of the Wimmera is very flat, with only the Grampians and Mount Arapiles rising above vast plains and the low plateaux that form the Great Divide in this part of Victoria. Stock Route
A stock route, also known as travelling stock route (TSR), is an authorised thoroughfare for the walking of domestic livestock such as sheep or cattle from one location to another in Australia. The stock routes across the country are colloquially known as The Long Paddock or Long Paddock. A travelling stock route may often be distinguished from an ordinary country road by the fact that the grassy verges on either side of the road are very much wider, and the property fences being set back much further from the roadside than is usual, or open stretches of unfenced land. The reason for this is so that the livestock may feed on the vegetation that grows on the verges as they travel, especially in times of drought.
