Naval Reserve Officer Training School
The Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) program is a college-based, commissioned officer training program of the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps. Origins A pilot Naval Reserve unit was established in September 1924 at St. John's College in Annapolis, Maryland. It let the Navy test the concept before establishing its regular units. In 1926, the U.S. Department of the Navy established the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps. Its purpose was to produce a reserve of qualified officers who would be needed for a possible rapid expansion of the military in the case of an unforeseen emergency. A secondary objective was to acquaint college faculty and students with the Navy and its national importance. The United States Navy Reserve (USNR), known as the United States Naval Reserve from 1915 to 2005, is the Reserve Component (RC) of the United States Navy. Members of the Navy Reserve, called Reservists, are categorized as being in either the Selected Reserve (SELRES), the Training and Administration of the Reserve (TAR), the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR), or the Retired Reserve. Virginia Tech Corps Of Cadets
The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets (VTCC) is the military component of the student body at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. Cadets live together in residence halls, attend morning formation, wear a distinctive uniform, and receive an intensive military and leadership educational experience similar to that available at the United States service academies. The Corps of Cadets has existed from the founding of the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College in 1872 to the present-day institution of Virginia Tech, which is designated a senior military college by federal law. The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, commonly known simply as The Citadel, is a public senior military college in Charleston, South Carolina. Established in 1842, it is one of six senior military colleges in the United States. It has 18 academic departments divided into five schools offering 31 majors and 57 minors. The South Carolina Corps of Cadets is the military component of the student body at The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. The Corps of Cadets is the only residential, full-time undergraduate program at The Citadel, focusing on educating the "whole person." History Organization The military organization consists of a regiment composed of five battalions, each composed of four companies of approximately 100 cadets. The regiment and each battalion have a staff organization, and is headed by a commander. Within each company are three platoons, and platoons are divided into squads. STA-21 or Seaman to Admiral - 21 is a United States Navy commissioning program, designed to enable active-duty sailors to get a college degree and become commissioned officers. History Seaman to Admiral was previously one of several different paths for active-duty sailors to become commissioned officers. The diversity of programs lacked uniformity in benefits, selection procedures, educational opportunities, and program requirements, and created a confusing system of program applications, deadlines, and options for fleet applicants which was complex for the Navy to manage and administer. As a result, the Navy combined most of these commissioning paths into one consolidated program preserving the "Seaman to Admiral" name, possibly during the 1994 STA program rebirth.
