The Nauru national rugby sevens team made its international debut at the 2015 Pacific Games in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. History Nauru was introduced to the sport of Rugby sevens in 2012. They became an associate member of the Federation of Oceania Rugby Unions in 2014. 2015 Pacific Games
The 2015 Pacific Games, also known as Port Moresby 2015 or POM 2015, was held in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, from 4 to 18 July 2015. It was the fifteenth staging of the Pacific Games as well as the third to be hosted in Port Moresby. More than 3,700 athletes from the 22 Pacific Games Associations plus first time entrants Australia and New Zealand, took part. With almost 300 sets of medals, the games featured 28 sports, 19 of which are on the 2016 Summer Olympics program. Only men's football was a straight qualifying event for Rio 2016. These sporting events took place in 14 venues in the host city. The host nation, Papua New Guinea, topped the medal table for only the second time, winning the most golds (88) and most medals overall (217). 2016 Oceania Sevens Championship
The 2016 Oceania Sevens Championship was the ninth Oceania Sevens in men's rugby sevens. It was held at ANZ Stadium in Suva, Fiji. The host nation Fiji won the tournament, defeating Samoa 28–19 in the final. Papua New Guinea and Tonga, as the two highest finishers not already core teams in the Sevens World Series, won qualification to the 2017 Hong Kong Sevens for a chance to earn core team status for the 2018 season. Rugby union in Nauru is a minor but growing sport. The national team have competed in various international competitions, including the Pacific Games. Governing body The governing body is an associate member of Oceania Rugby (formerly FORU), and has applied to become an associate member of World Rugby. History Rugby was first introduced into Nauru, by its connection with Australia and the British Empire in the 1890s. However with Australian rules football in Nauru booming in popularity from the 1910s and by 1954, local rugby and soccer leagues were all wound up without sufficient players. The newly formed South Pacific Rugby Union formed in 1969 and extended an invitation for Nauru to join, however there was no organised competition at the time. The Vanuatu national rugby sevens team is Vanuatu's representative in rugby sevens. History At the 1999 South Pacific Games held in Guam, Vanuatu won its second rugby medal, defeating Solomon Islands for the bronze in the rugby 7s. The first bronze medal had been won for the rugby 15's in 1966, as New Hebrides. In the 2000 Telecom Oceania Sevens held in Rarotonga, Vanuatu went on to beat Tahiti 31–0 to win the Bowl. The tournament was a qualifier for the 2001 Rugby World Cup Sevens and the last World Cup place was taken by the Cook Islands, who won the Oceania Sevens Cup. At the 2011 Pacific Games, Vanuatu finished in 9th place, defeating Tahiti 7–17. 2011 Pacific Games
The 2011 Pacific Games (officially known as NC 2011) took place in Nouméa, New Caledonia, from August 27 to September 10, 2011. Nouméa was the 14th host of the Pacific Games. Upon closure of the registration for entries, "some 4,300 athletes" had registered from the twenty-two competing nations, although it was expected that not all would attend. Competing nations There were 22 nations from the Pacific competing in Nouméa. 2017 Pacific Mini Games
The 2017 Pacific Mini Games were held in Port Vila, Vanuatu, in December 2017. It was the tenth edition of the Pacific Mini Games, and the second to be hosted in Vanuatu (after the 1993 games). Host selection Vanuatu was awarded the right to host the games at a September 2011 meeting of the Pacific Games Council's General Assembly. Nauru and the Northern Mariana Islands were the other countries to bid. The event was originally planned for September 2017 but preparations were delayed by Cyclone Pam. Both rounds of voting took place on the 4 September 2011 with Nauru eliminated after the first round. In the final round, Vanuatu edged Northern Mariana Islands by 4 votes to earn hosting rights.
