Ghana has a large system of 21 protected areas which include 7 national parks, 6 Resource Reserves, 2 Wildlife Sanctuaries, 1 Strict Nature Reserve and 5 coastal wetlands. Kalakpa Game Production Reserve
Kalakpa Game Production Reserve is a 32,020 hectare forest reserve in Ghana. Location The reserve is located in the southeastern part of the Country, about 120 kilometers northeast of the capital Accra and about 30 kilometers south from the Volta Regional capital, Ho. Description The protected area was founded in 1975 by the Ghanaian government, located on the foothills of the Togo Mountains in the Ho Municipal Area. Before this area became an animal reserve, it served mainly as preferred hunting area for expatriates in Ghana. In this animal reserve you can find, apart from lions and elephants. Among other animals there is a variety of buffaloes, antelopes, baboons and smaller mammals in the reserve. The bird world is worth seeing here. The reserve also boasts many butterfly species. Gbele Resource Centre
The Gbele Resource Centre or Gbele Game Production Reserve is one of the lesser known game reserves in Ghana. It is located in the Sissala West, Sissala East Municipal and Daffiama Bussie Issa districts of the Upper West Region The reserve is the fourth largest in Ghana. The nearest town is Tumu, capital of the Sissala East Municipal District which is 17 kilometres to the north. A total of 176 species of birds have been recorded in the reserve. The staff in the reserve are aware of an additional 18 species. The reserve contains antelope, hartebeest, bushbuck, waterbuck, savannah duikers and warthogs, baboon, patas, green monkey among others. There are about 190 species of birds as well. The Boin Tano Forest Reserve is a nature reserve located in the Western Region of Ghana. It was established in 1968. This site, which is , is rich both in faunal and floral species. Flora and fauna The Boin Tano Forest Reserve is located only five degrees north of the Equator and around north of the Gulf of Guinea in Atlantic Ocean, therefore giving it a warm and humid climate.
