The Densu River is a 116 km long river in Ghana rising in the Atewa Range. It flows through an economically important agricultural region, supplies half the drinking water to Ghana's capital city of Accra, and ends in an ecologically significant wetlands at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. Sakumono Lagoon
Sakumono Lagoon is a coastal lagoon in Sakumono near Tema in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, West Africa. The site covers 1,340 hectares. It was designated to form the bulk of the Sakumo Ramsar Site, a Ramsar Convention, Ramsar wetland site of international importance, on 14 August 1992. Physical features The site consists of a broad coastal Brackish water, brackish lagoon with a narrow connection to the sea, the main habitats being open lagoon, surrounding floodplains, freshwater marsh and coastal savanna grassland. Songhor Lagoon
The Songor Lagoon is located at 05°45'N 000°30'E on the eastern coast of Ghana, West Africa. The site covers an area of 28,740 hectares, and it is located just outside the major town of Ada and to the west of the Volta River estuary. It was designated as Ramsar wetland site of international importance number 566 on June 22, 1988. In 2011, UNESCO approved the Songor Biosphere Reserve as part of the World Network of Biosphere Reserves. Among several other important functions, it acts as habitat and/or breeding ground for several notable species. Physical features The site itself is a closed lagoon that is continually refilled by seepage, runoff, creeks, and streams. It is characterized by high salinity levels and surrounded by mudflats that are inundated for most of the year. Keta Lagoon
Keta Lagoon, also called Anlo-Keta lagoon, is the largest of the over 90 lagoons that cover the 550 km stretch of the coastline of Ghana. This lagoon is 126.13 km in length. It is located in the eastern coast of Ghana and separated from the Gulf of Guinea by a narrow strip of sandbar. This open salty water is surrounded by flood plains and mangrove swamps. Together they form the Keta Lagoon Ramsar site which covers 1200 km2 There are seasonal inflow of sea water during high tide from the Gulf of Guinea and regular inflow of rivers. The rivers which drain into the lagoon include the Aka, the Tordzi River and Belikpa stream which enter the lagoon from the north. The lagoon is surrounded by many settlements. Owabi Wildlife Sanctuary
Owabi Wildlife Sanctuary is a bird sanctuary, located in Kumasi, Ghana. It is home to many butterflies, over 140 species of birds, monkeys and the more reclusive bushpig, bushbuck and antelope. The region is rich with indigenous birds and some migrants. There are about 161 kinds of birds. The sanctuary is also the only inland Ramsar Convention site in the country of Ghana. Muni-Pomadze Ramsar Site
The Muni-Pomadze Ramsar Site is in Winneba, Ghana. The Muni-Pomadze Ramsar site was designated as a Ramsar site in 1992 and it included two forest reserves which is the Yenku A and B forest Reserves.it also includes is the catchment of three seasonal streams, the Pratu, the Boaku and the Muni, which drain into Muni Lagoon. The lagoon surrounds the floor plain and the adjacent sand beach. which constitute the southern part of the site. Location Muni-Pomadze Ramsar Site is situated to the west of the coastal town of Winneba, approximately 55 kilometers west of Accra. The Northern part of the site comprises two protected areas.
