The Universitatea Națională de Educație Fizică și Sport (UNEFS), is one of the highest-profile higher education institutions in Romania, and was founded on 1 December 1922, in Bucharest. It was the tenth institution of its kind in the world and the fifth in Europe. UNEFS is one of the major physical education and sport institutions in Eastern Europe, and the degrees are awarded by the Ministry of National Education, and are recognised by other countries with whom bilateral agreements have been signed. Iolanda Balaș (, hu, Balázs Jolán, later ''Balázs-Sőtér Jolán''; 12 December 1936 – 11 March 2016) was a Romanian athlete, an Olympic champion and former world record holder in the high jump. Elisabeta Lipă
Elisabeta Lipă (; née Oleniuc on 26 October 1964) is a retired rower and government official from Romania. She is the most decorated rower in the history of the Olympics, winning five gold, two silver and one bronze medals. She holds the record amongst rowers for the most years between gold medals, at 20 years. Since 2004, Lipă has served in various government positions including Minister of Youth and Sport under Dacian Ciolos from 2015 to 2017. Since 2009, she has also served as the president of the Romanian Rowing Federation and the Dinamo București Sports Club. Sanda Toma (later Urichianu, born 24 February 1956) is a retired Romanian rower. Competing in single sculls she won the world title in 1979 and 1981 and an Olympic gold medal in 1980. Toma first trained in handball and athletics, winning four junior national titles in throwing events, before changing to rowing. In 1976 she was included to the national team, where she first competed in doubles, together with Olga Homeghi. In 1979 she changed to single sculls. Violeta Szekely, née Beclea (born 26 March 1965, in Dolheștii Mari, Suceava County) is a Romanian former middle distance runner who competed mainly in the 1500 metres. She competed in two Olympic Games, in 1992 and 2000. She was favored to win the 2000 Summer Olympics 1500 metres after a stellar season, but getting boxed in around the final curb would cost her the gold medal. She only got out about 80 metres from the end and while she made up considerable ground was unable to catch the ground lost while trapped inside to surprise winner Nouria Merah-Benida. She was also favored to win the 2001 World 1500 metre title after dominating the Golden League series, but was beaten out by bitter rival and teammate Gabriela Szabo.
