National Security Agency (Bahrain)
The National Security Agency (NSA) or Bahrain Intelligence Agency (BIA1) ( ar, جهاز الأمن الوطني) is an investigating authority in Bahrain that is associated with but not formally part of the Ministry of the Interior. The NSA was formed after King Hamad issued Decree No. 14 of 2002 declaring it as the replacement of the General Directorate for State Security Investigations. The NSA was granted the power to make arrests by a 2008 royal decree, and lost this power in 2011, again by royal decree. History Before 2002, the NSA was organized as the 'General Directorate for State Security Investigations' ( ar, الإدارة العامة لمباحث أمن الدولة), also known as 'Security and Intelligence Service'. It was headed by Ian Henderson from 1966 to 1998. After Henderson retired in 1998, the position was taken by Khalid bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, a nephew of the then-ruler Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa. The Supreme Defense Council (SDC) (Arabic:مجلس الدفاع الأعلى) is Bahrain's highest defense authority responsible for making highest level of decisions regarding defense and security. It consist of 14 members, all of whom are drawn from the Al Khalifa ruling family. It is headed by the King, who is also the Supreme Commander of Bahrain Defense Force (BDF) and includes: the Crown Prince (king's eldest son), the Prime Minister (king's uncle), the Royal Court Minister and ten senior officials from the Al Khalifa family such as the Commander-in-Chief of BDF, and the heads of certain government agencies, such as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Interior, Minister of Defence and Director of the National Security Agency (NSA). WikiLeaks () is an international non-profit organisation that published news leaks and classified media provided by anonymous sources. Julian Assange, an Australian Internet activist, is generally described as its founder and director and is currently fighting extradition to the United States over his work with WikiLeaks. Bahrain Radio and Television Corporation (BRTC) is a public broadcaster in Bahrain with headquarters in Manama. The BRTC is owned by the government of Bahrain, and under the control of the Information Affairs Authority. History BRTC was set up in 1971, and became an independent body in January 1993. The corporation regulates visual and audio broadcasting in the Kingdom of Bahrain. It broadcasts programs in both Arabic and English. Radio Bahrain Radio Bahrain was established in 1955, was taken over by BRTC in 1971, and became an independent body in 1993. Its English-language radio service has been on-air since 1977, broadcasting four hours a day from a studio in Isa Town. In 1982 the station was moved to a building in Adliya. Hamad Ibn Isa Al Khalifa (1872–1942)
Hamad ibn Isa Al Khalifa KCIE, CSI (6 February 1872 – 20 February 1942) was the Hakim (ruler) of Bahrain from the death of his father, Hakim Isa ibn Ali, on 9 December 1932 until his own death in 1942. Biography Hamad was born on 6 February 1872, the second-born son of eight of Sheikh Isa ibn Ali Al Khalifa (his elder brother predeceased him in 1893), and received a private education. On 26 May 1923, Shaikh Hamad was officially proclaimed Deputy Ruler. On 9 December 1932 he succeeded his father on the throne of Bahrain and his appointment was made official on 9 February 1933. He lived in the Al-Sakhir Palace from around 1925 until his death. He died on 20 February 1942 in Al Rumaitha, Bahrain, and was buried in the Al Hunaynya Cemetery next to his ancestor Shaikh Salman bin Ahmed Al Khalifa. The Ministry of the Interior is responsible for law enforcement and public safety in Bahrain. The headquarters of the ministry is the Diwan Fort (also known as Manama Fort) in Manama, colloquially referred to as "al-gal'aa". The current Interior Minister is Lieutenant General Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, who has been in office since 2004. He is a member of the Al Khalifa royal family and a cousin of King Hamad.
