Wilkes County is a county located in the east central portion of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 10,593. The county seat is the city of Washington. State Route 44 (SR 44) is a state highway that runs southwest-to-northeast through portions of Jones, Putnam, Greene, Taliaferro, Wilkes, and Lincoln counties in the central and east-central parts of the U.S. state of Georgia. The route connects Gray with the central portion of Lincoln County, northwest of Lincolnton. Route description SR 44 begins at an intersection with US 129/ SR 18/ SR 22 in Gray, in Jones County. At this intersection, SR 44 begins, concurrent with US 129. The two routes head north-northeast out of town. They begin to skirt along the eastern edge of Oconee National Forest. Danburg, Georgia
Danburg is an unincorporated community in Wilkes County, in the U.S. state of Georgia. It is about a mile southwest of the Lincoln County, Georgia line. History A variant name was "Danburgh". The community derives its name from one Samuel Danforth (1798-1856). The Georgia General Assembly incorporated the place in 1904 as the "Town of Danburg", with municipal corporate limits extending in a one-mile radius from the front door of Anderson's country store. A post office called Danburg(h) was established in 1826, and remained in operation until 1980. Danburg's town charter was dissolved in 1995. The highway travels from US 378/ SR 43 in Lincolnton northwest to SR 72 at a point southeast of Elberton.
