State Route 44 (SR 44) is a state highway that runs southwest-to-northeast through portions of Jones, Putnam, Greene, Taliaferro, Wilkes, and Lincoln counties in the central and east-central parts of the U.S. state of Georgia. The route connects Gray with the central portion of Lincoln County, northwest of Lincolnton. Route description SR 44 begins at an intersection with US 129/ SR 18/ SR 22 in Gray, in Jones County. At this intersection, SR 44 begins, concurrent with US 129. The two routes head north-northeast out of town. They begin to skirt along the eastern edge of Oconee National Forest. They enter the forest very briefly before skirting the eastern edge again. They have yet another brief entrance into the forest and yet again skirt along the edge. Gray, Georgia
Gray is a city in Jones County, Georgia, United States. The population was 3,276 at the 2010 census, up from 1,811 at the 2000 census. The city is the county seat of Jones County. It is part of the Macon Metropolitan Area. History Gray was founded in the 1850s and named for local resident James M. Gray. In 1905, the seat of Jones County was transferred to Gray. Uncle Remus
Uncle Remus is the fictional title character and narrator of a collection of African American folktales compiled and adapted by Joel Chandler Harris and published in book form in 1881. Harris was a journalist in post-Reconstruction era Atlanta, and he produced seven Uncle Remus books. He did so by introducing tales that he had heard and framing them in the plantation context. He wrote his stories in a dialect which was his interpretation of the Deep South African-American language of the time. For these framing and stylistic choices, Harris's collection has garnered controversy since its publication.
