Weakley County, Tennessee
Weakley County is a county located in the northwest of the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2010 census, the population was 35,021. Its county seat is Dresden. Its largest city is Martin, the home of the University of Tennessee at Martin. The county was established by the Tennessee General Assembly on October 21, 1823, and is named for U.S. Congressman Robert Weakley (1764–1845). Weakley County comprises the Martin, TN Micropolitan Statistical Area. History Weakley County was created in October 1823 from some of the land that the Chickasaw people ceded to the United States in the Treaty of 1818. The county was named after Colonel Robert Weakley, a member of the House of Representatives, a speaker of the State Senate, and the man commissioned to treat (negotiate) with the Chickasaw. Gleason, Tennessee
Gleason is a town in Weakley County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 1,445 at the 2010 census. The city also holds the annual Tater Town Parade and festival in the fall, and the Hometown Christmas event. The Ladies High School basketball team, the Lady Bulldogs, won the State Championship in 1992, 1999 and 2007. Gleason is a generally conservative town with conservative values, but other than political opinions few things are important to residents: girls' basketball, Dollar General, and fund raisers. State Route 22 (SR 22) is a south-to-north state highway in the western part of Tennessee, United States. It begins at the Mississippi state line in McNairy County, where the roadway continues as Mississippi Highway 2 (MS 2). It ends at the Kentucky state line in Lake County, when it crosses into the Kentucky Bend, a detached portion of Fulton County, Kentucky. Gardner, Tennessee
Gardner (also Gardner Station, Gardners Station, Gardner's, Gardnersville) is a former town, now an unincorporated community, in western Weakley County, Tennessee, United States. History Gardner was founded in 1856 by its namesake, Colonel John Almus Gardner. He was the first president of the Nashville and Northwestern Railroad (a predecessor to the Nashville, Chattanooga and St. Louis Railway) and he owned the land on which the town was established. The town had a period of prosperity in the years after the Civil War. As the only significant town between Dresden and Union City, it was a business center for western Weakley County. It became an incorporated municipality in 1869, with lawyer William Parker Caldwell serving as its first mayor. Martin is a city in Weakley County, Tennessee, United States. The population was 11,473 according to the 2010 census. The city is the home of the University of Tennessee at Martin. History Martin is named for Captain William Martin. William Martin was born in Halifax County, Virginia in 1806, and moved to Weakley County, Tennessee with his wife Sarah in 1832. Captain Martin prospered through tobacco farming and began working to establish a railroad connection in what would later become Martin in 1852. It was not until after his death in 1859 that his sons, led primarily by George W. Martin, persuaded the Mississippi Central Railroad to locate a connection with the Nashville and Northwestern Railroad in what would become Martin, Tennessee in 1872. State Route 89 (SR 89) is a north-south state highway in the farmland of West Tennessee. The route is long. Route description The first few miles of SR 89 hugs the Dyer-Gibson County line.
