Haskell County, Oklahoma
Haskell County is a county located in the southeast quadrant of the U.S. state of Oklahoma. As of the 2010 census, the population was 12,769. Its county seat is Stigler. The county is named in honor of Charles N. Haskell, the first governor of Oklahoma. History The area now comprising Haskell County was created at statehood primarily from the former Sans Bois County of the Choctaw Nation in Indian Territory. Sans Bois County was part of the Moshulatubbee District, one of three administrative super-regions comprising the Choctaw Nation. Small portions of present-day Haskell County fell within Gaines County and Skullyville County, Choctaw Nation. In 1908 county voters picked Stigler over Keota and Whitefield as the county seat. Oklahoma State Highway 2
State Highway 2, abbreviated SH-2 or OK-2, is a designation for two distinct highways maintained by the U.S. state of Oklahoma. Though they were once connected, the middle section of highway was concurrent with three different U.S. highways, so the middle section was decommissioned for reasons of redundancy. The southern section of highway runs from Antlers to U.S. Highway 64 near Warner, covering through the southeastern part of the state. Kinta, Oklahoma
Kinta is a town in Haskell County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 297 at the 2010 census, an increase of 22.2 percent over the figure of 243 recorded in 2000. History Kinta was founded in 1901 by George W. Scott, son-in-law of Greenwood McCurtain, the last chief of the Choctaw Nation before Oklahoma became a state. Scott named the town for nearby Beaver Creek, the name ''Kinta'' being the Choctaw word for "beaver." He moved his store to Kinta from San Bois, established a post office in his store, and built the first permanent building in town in 1903. San Bois was then the Choctaw capital, but had been bypassed by the Fort Smith and Western Railroad. Stigler is a city in and county seat of Haskell County, Oklahoma. The population was 2,685 at the time of the 2010 census, down from 2,731 recorded in 2000. History At the time of its founding, Newman, later Stigler, was located in Sans Bois County, a part of the Moshulatubbee District of the Choctaw Nation in Indian Territory. A post office was established at Newman, Indian Territory on April 30, 1892. The community was named for Dr. Martin W. Newman, a pioneer and physician.Shirk, George H. Keota is a town in northeastern Haskell County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 438 at the 2020 census, a 22.3 percent decrease over the figure of 564 recorded in 2010. History The town was first called "KeeOtter", which was later changed to "Keota".
