Virginia City, Montana
Virginia City is a town in and the county seat of Madison County, Montana, United States. In 1961 the town and the surrounding area were designated a National Historic Landmark District, the Virginia City Historic District. The population was 219 at the 2020 census. History Founding In May 1863, a group of prospectors were headed toward the Yellowstone River and instead came upon a party of the Crow tribe and was forced to return to Bannack. On May 26, 1863, Bill Fairweather and Henry Edgar discovered gold near Alder Creek. The prospectors could not keep the site a secret and were followed on their return to the gold bearing site. A mining district was set up in order to formulate rules about individual gold claims. On June 16, 1863, under the name of "Verina" the township was formed a mile south of the gold fields. Ennis, Montana
Ennis is a town in Madison County, Montana, United States, in the southwestern part of the state. The population was 917 at the 2020 census. U.S. Route 287 runs through town, following the Madison River as it descends from the town of West Yellowstone. History In 1863, gold was discovered in Alder Gulch. This brought on "the rush." Two months later, William Ennis homesteaded the site along the Madison River that was soon to become the town of Ennis, his namesake. In 1886, a mystery creature was noted for making livestock kills in the Madison Valley. A local rancher, Israel Ammon Hutchins, finally shot and killed the beast, after accidentally shooting one of his cattle, which was on the other side of some brush. A local taxidermist stuffed the canine. Jack Kirby (Hutchins' Grandson) tracked the mount to a Museum in Pocatello, Idaho, ''circa'' 2007. Laurin, Montana
Laurin is an unincorporated community in Madison County, Montana, United States. The community is on Montana Highway 287 north of Alder. History Laurin is named for Jean Baptiste Laurin, who founded a trading post in the mid-19th century that became the site of the community. The nearby Alder Gulch gold rush of the 1860s brought thousands of miners to the area, and while most left by the end of the decade, Jean Baptiste Laurin became rich by selling general merchandise to the miners. Montana Highway 287 (MT 287) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Montana. The highway runs from MT 41 in Twin Bridges east to U.S. Route 287 (US 287) in Ennis. MT 287 is the primary east–west highway of Madison County. The highway connects the county's four towns, including Sheridan and the county seat of Virginia City. The course of MT 287 follows the ultimate portions of two trails that met in Virginia City, the center of the Alder Gulch gold rush of the mid-1860s and the second territorial capital of Montana. Parts of the highway were improved from rudimentary roads around 1920 from Virginia City to Ennis. This connection became the first portion of Montana Highway 34 in the early 1930s; the highway was extended west to Twin Bridges in the late 1930s.
