The National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) is the United States federal government's official list of districts, sites, buildings, structures and objects deemed worthy of preservation for their historical significance or "great artistic value". A property listed in the National Register, or located within a National Register Historic District, may qualify for tax incentives derived from the total value of expenses incurred in preserving the property. The passage of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) in 1966 established the National Register and the process for adding properties to it. Of the more than one and a half million properties on the National Register, 95,000 are listed individually. The remainder are contributing resources within historic districts. Burke County, North Carolina
Burke County is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. As of the 2020 census, the population was 87,570. Its county seat is Morganton. Burke County is part of the Hickory–Lenoir–Morganton, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Indigenous peoples inhabited the interior as well as the coastal areas for thousands of years. Native Americans of the complex and far-flung Mississippian culture inhabited the county long before Europeans arrived in the New World. They were part of a trade network extending from the Gulf Coast to the Great Lakes. They built earthwork mounds, including at Joara, a site and regional chiefdom in North Carolina. Valdese is a town in Burke County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 4,689 at the 2020 census. It is part of the Hickory-Lenoir- Morganton Metropolitan Statistical Area. One of the largest Waldensian congregations in the United States was founded in the town in the late nineteenth century, now known as the Waldensian Presbyterian Church. The town was settled by immigrants from the Cottian Alps in the Piedmont region of Italy. History Settled in 1893 by a group of Waldensians from Northern Italy, the town was incorporated in 1920. Salem, NC
Salem is a census-designated place (CDP) in Burke County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,218 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hickory–Lenoir– Morganton Metropolitan Statistical Area. History The town of Salem was originally designed as a Moravian settlement by Frederick William von Marschall in 1772 as part of the Wachovia Tract. The Moravians had previously bought this 99,000 acre plot of land from Lord Granville in 1753. At first, von Marschall sold the plots of land only to Moravians, which led to some conflict. The restrictions were slowly lifted, and by 1856 the Moravian church ended the lease system. Gilboa Methodist Church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. Hildebran, NC
Hildebran is a town in Burke County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,023 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Hickory-Lenoir- Morganton Metropolitan Statistical Area. History There are two conflicting stories from where the name Hildebran came from. The one more accepted is that it was named after 19th-century land owner Solomon Hildebrand and his son Jacob; the other is that it was named after the 11th-century Pope Gregory VII (Hildebrand of Sovana). When Hildebran received its charter in 1899, the "d" was dropped from the name. Geography Hildebran is located in eastern Burke County. Its southeastern border is also the border with Catawba County. The town of Long View borders Hildebran to the east, and the census-designated place of Icard borders Hildebran to the west.
