The National Radio Television Foundation ( el, Εθνικό Ίδρυμα Ραδιοφωνίας Τηλεοράσεως, Ethnikó Ídryma Radiofonías Tileoráseos) or EIRT () was the Greek state broadcaster founded in 1970, during the junta. In 1975 it converted to ERT. History The EIRT was the fourth state body renovation of Greece and the first state TV operator in Greece. The Greek junta or Regime of the Colonels, . Also known within Greece as just the Junta ( el, η Χούντα, i Choúnta, links=no, ), the Dictatorship ( el, η Δικτατορία, i Diktatoría, links=no, ) or the Seven Years ( el, η Επταετία, i Eptaetía, links=no, ). was a right-wing military dictatorship that ruled Greece from 1967 to 1974. The Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation ( el, Ελληνική Ραδιοφωνία Τηλεόραση AE, Ellinikí Radiofonía Tileórasi SA) or ERT () is the state-owned public radio and television broadcaster of Greece. History Overview ERT began broadcasting in 1938 as the Radio Broadcasting Service or YRE (). Ioannis Metaxas
Ioannis Metaxas (; el, Ιωάννης Μεταξάς; 12th April 187129th January 1941) was a Greek military officer and politician who served as the Prime Minister of Greece from 1936 until his death in 1941. He governed constitutionally for the first four months of his tenure, and thereafter as the strongman of the 4th of August Regime following his appointment by King George II. Born to an aristocratic family in Ithaca, Metaxas took part in the Greco-Turkish War of 1897 and the Balkan Wars (1912–13), and quickly rose through the ranks of the Hellenic Army. A Monarchist during the National Schism, Metaxas unsuccessfully opposed Prime Minister Eleftherios Venizelos and Greece's entry in World War I; thus he was exiled to Corsica in 1917. On his return, Metaxas moved into politics and founded the Freethinkers' Party, but had only limited success under the Second Hellenic Republic. The National Radio Foundation ( el, Εθνικό Ίδρυμα Ραδιοφωνίας, ΕΙΡ, ''Ethniko Idryma Radiofonias'', EIR), was the main public state broadcaster of Greece from 1945 until 1970. The agency was founded in 1945, following liberation from the Axis occupation of Greece, as the successor of the occupation-era ''Hellenic Radio Limited Company'' (AERE) and the pre-war ''Radio Broadcast Service'' (YRE). EIR was one of 23 founding broadcasting organisations of the European Broadcasting Union in 1950. It started offering television services in 1966, the same year that the second public broadcaster, the military-run Armed Forces Television (TED), also began operations. Georgios Papadopoulos
Geórgios Papadopoulos (; el, Γεώργιος Παπαδόπουλος ; 5 May 1919 – 27 June 1999) was a Greeks, Greek military officer and political leader who ruled Greece as a military dictator from 1967 to 1973. He joined the Hellenic Army, Royal Hellenic Army during the Second World War and resisted the Greco-Italian War, 1940 Italian invasion. Later on, he allegedly became an active Collaboration with the Axis powers, Axis collaborator with the Security Battalions, although this claim has been disputed by historians. He remained in the army after the war and rose to the rank of colonel. In April 1967, Papadopoulos and a group of other mid-level army officers overthrew the democratic government and established a Greek junta, military junta that lasted until 1974. Broadcasting House, also known as the House of Radio ( el, Ραδιομέγαρο, Radiomégaro) is an office and broadcasting installation building in Athens, Greece. It currently houses the Greek state broadcaster, the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation. History Construction and early years Construction started in 1968, during the Greek military dictatorship for the housing of EIRT (National Radio Television Foundation), later replaced by the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT).
