National Prize For Literature (Chile)
{{Use dmy dates, date=October 2020 In Chile, the National Prize for Literature ''(Premio Nacional de Literatura)'' was created by Law No. 7,368 during the presidency of Juan Antonio Ríos on 8 November 1942. It consists of a lump-sum monetary prize (16 million Chilean pesos, about US$30K) and a lifetime monthly stipend (20 UTM, about US$17K/year). It was originally awarded every year until the amendments introduced by Law No. 17,595 of 1972, when it became biennial. It's regarded as one of the National Prizes in their homeland. Winners are selected on the overall quality of their works, regardless of genre. Víctor Domingo Silva
Víctor Domingo Silva Endeiza (May 12, 1882, Tongoy, Elqui Province – August 20, 1960, Santiago) was a Chilean poet, journalist, playwright and writer. He was of Basque descent by mother's side. Silva was born into an educated family who instilled in him a love of literature. In 1906 he was elected diputado (deputy) (a member of the lower house of Chile's bicameral Congress) of the provinces of Copiapó, Freirina and Chañaral. During his tenure as Deputy, Silva began publishing poetry in El Mercurio, a well-known newspaper centered in the Valparaiso region. He was dubbed "''el poeta nacional''" ("the national poet") since he dedicated a good portion of his poetry to national topics, including his celebrated poem, ''La Bandera'' ("The Flag"), in which he exalts his patriotism. Salvador Reyes Figueroa was a Chilean writer who won the 1967 Chilean National Prize for Literature. Biography He was born in Copiapó to Arturo Reyes and Luisa Figueroa on August 16, 1899. Juvencio Valle
Juvencio Valle, also known by the pseudonym Gilberto Concha Riffo (November 6, 1900 – February 12, 1999), was a noted Chilean poet. He is a recipient of the ''Premio Nacional de Literatura de Chile'', a National Prize awarded to poets of high reputation. Biography Valle was born in Villa Almagro, Nueva Imperial in 1900. Pablo De Rokha
Pablo de Rokha (born Carlos Ignacio Díaz Loyola; 17 October 1894 – 10 September 1968) was a Chilean poet. He won the Chilean Premio Nacional de Literatura (National Literature Prize) in 1965 and is counted among the four greats of Chilean poetry, along with Pablo Neruda, Vicente Huidobro and Gabriela Mistral. Francisco Coloane Cárdenas (; July 19, 1910 – August 5, 2002) was a Chilean novelist and short fiction writer whose works have been translated into many languages. Benjamín Subercaseaux
Benjamín Subercaseaux Zañartu (1902–1973) was a Chilean writer and researcher. He won the Chilean National Prize for Literature in 1963. Subercaseaux was the son of Benjamín Subercaseaux Browne and Ida Zañartu Luca. His father died shortly after his birth, and he was raised by his mother and his paternal grandmother, Juana Browne. Juan Guzmán Cruchaga
Juan Guzmán Cruchaga (March 27, 1895 – July 21, 1979) was a Chilean poet and diplomat. He won the Chilean National Prize for Literature in 1962. Guzman Cruchaga was of Basque descent. He was the son of Juan José Guzmán Guzmán and Amelia Cruchaga Aspillaga. He attended the colegio de San Ignacio from 1905, finishing his humanities subjects in 1912. Marta Brunet (August 9, 1897 in Chillán, Chile – October 27, 1967 in Montevideo), was a Chilean writer. She was a recipient of the National Prize for Literature. Life and work She was the only child of Ambrosio Brunet Molina and his Spanish wife María Presentación Cáraves de Colosia. Hernán Díaz Arrieta (1891–1984), widely known by his pen name, Alone, was a Chilean writer, film critic and memoirist. He won the Chilean National Prize for Literature in 1959. Díaz Arrieta was born on May 11, 1891, in the town of Buin on the outskirts of Santiago, Chile. He spent a year in the Seminary of Santiago, a year at the Instituto Comercial de Santiago, and finally attended dental school for a brief time. Diego Dublé Urrutia (Angol, Región de la Araucanía; 8 July 1877-ibídem, 13 November 1967) was a Chilean poet, painter, and diplomat. He won the Chilean National Prize for Literature in 1958.
